Greener Cleaner: Leading the charge for a plastic free planet

Surfers Against Sewage
Plastic is an amazing material. It keeps us safe and makes our lives easier in countless ways. But big businesses and disposable, throwaway consumer culture have turned this wonder substance into something that threatens the natural balance of the ocean – and life on this planet in general.
Marine wildlife is in frequent danger of ingesting or getting tangled in plastic, something that’s often fatal. Microplastics are also entering our oceans and rivers at alarming rates, and we still don’t know the full extent of the threat this poses to animal and human health. Toxic chemicals and pathogens are being carried to vulnerable marine habitats, damaging these fragile ecosystems. And with the ocean being the biggest carbon sink on the planet, anything that threatens its future also has an effect on climate change.
Surfers Against Sewage and their volunteers perform a yearly brand audit, recording the pollution they find throughout the year during the Million Mile Clean. With this data they can identify the brands that are producing the most plastic waste.
Their annual Dirty Dozen list exposes the twelve biggest plastic polluters in the UK, holding them to account and highlighting their delays and broken environmental promises. Check out the 2023 results here.
How can I help?
The goal is to end plastic pollution on UK beaches by 2030, and all plastic pollution by 2040. Every Greener Cleaner product sold moves us a little closer to that target.
