Plastic Free July 2024
Since 2011, Plastic Free July has been encouraging people to ditch their single-use plastic products for the duration of July. Founder Rebecca Prince-Ruiz hopes that the habits people form during the month will carry over into their daily lives.
400 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year, with 40% of that being single-use, and it typically takes over 400 years to decompose. It’s soon expected to outweigh all the fish in the ocean, and the effects on our marine ecosystem will be disastrous. It’s an issue that urgently needs addressing.
Plastic Free July 2023 saw an estimated 89 million participants across 190 countries, reducing their plastic consumption by a combined total of 240 million kg. 87% of participants ended up making at least one long-term change to their habits.
It’s already changing the world. Why not get involved?
Get involved
It might sound daunting. But you don’t have to change everything at once. Your first step could be as simple as buying a reusable water bottle or coffee cup. If a whole month of avoiding single-use plastic sounds difficult, try doing a week first, or even just a day. You might find it easier than you think, and before you know it, you’ll be ready to move on to bigger steps.
Try the Plastic Free July quiz to help figure out where you can make improvements. You can take the test again at the end of July to see how much progress you’ve made.
As with many environmental concerns, one of the most helpful things you can do is simply spread the word. Attending or hosting a Plastic Free Morning Tea is a great way to stimulate some discussion. You can use social media to get the word out, too.
We can help
Plastic sneaks into everything, and it’s tricky to know what products are safe to buy. It’s easy enough to spot plastic bottles and tubes, but did you know metal cans are often lined with plastic? It can even turn up in chewing gum and cigarette filters.
Let us take the stress out of sustainability. Our Plastic Free tag can help you find a wide range of plastic-free alternatives to everyday products.
There’s also the Minimise Plastic tag for products that contain much less plastic than their usual alternatives.
Companies like Ecoleaf, Miniml and Method sell refill packs for their reusable bottles to minimise plastic waste – check out the Refill tag to see what options are available.
With our help you can be sure you’re making sustainable choices. July might come to an end, but the quest to protect our ocean and our planet carries on.
