A message from DEC:

We have been absolutely blown away by the generosity of Ethical Superstore shoppers who have so generously given to the DEC Coronavirus Appeal, resulting in an incredible £45,643 being raised by donations at checkout. DEC Appeals help the most vulnerable people in the world – the poorest people in the world often bear the brunt of the worst effects of climate change, as they live in places made perilous by flooding, drought and other natural disasters exacerbated by climate change – and now they are bearing the brunt of the coronavirus pandemic too, with poor access to adequate healthcare, water, food and ways to earn an income. In places like Yemen, Somalia and South Sudan millions of people are being pushed closer to starvation. But with your support, the DEC member charities have been able to provide clean water, soap for people to wash their hands, public information so people can protect themselves from the virus, cash grants to buy food and other essentials, and PPE to keep heroic local health-workers safe as they confront Covid-19. Thank you.

Stopping Whaling – Commercial whaling is illegal, yet every year Japan, Norway and Iceland kill around 1,500 whales.
Creating healthy seas – Commercial fishing, oil and gas drilling, shipping and plastic pollution are threatening the lives of whales and dolphins.
Preventing deaths in nets –Hundreds of thousands of whales and dolphins are accidentally caught and killed by commercial fishing fleets every year.

“We want to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all the Ethical Superstore customers for supporting our work protecting whales and dolphins cross the globe. Last year, your donations helped us achieve some amazing things including: the designation of three new Marine Protected Areas in Scotland, we were able to continue our work to end whaling in Iceland, and are delighted that there will be no minke or fin whale hunts this year, and you’ve helped fund our ground-breaking research into how whales and dolphins can contribute to the mitigation of climate change.  2020 was a very difficult year for everyone, and these essential funds have helped us continue our fight for a world where every whale and dolphin is safe and free. Thank you!”

Despite being one of the richest countries in the world, every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. Carbon offset delivery – Trees For Life

Trees for Life

We appreciate that shipping parcels around the country will have an impact so we offer a carbon offset on your delivery. Offsetting may not be the solution to the climate crisis but it certainly can part of it. We chose to work with Trees for Life, a charity who are re-wilding the Scottish Highlands. Their vision is of a revitalised wild forest in the Highlands of Scotland, providing space for wildlife to flourish and communities to thrive. Not only is planting trees helping rebalance carbon dioxide but it is crucial in supporting everything from insects, birds up to mammals to create a viable ecosystem at a time when so many ecosystems are facing collapse with the destruction of wild habitats.

Since starting to work with Trees for Life the carbon offset scheme has resulted in 29,190 trees being planted! You can keep up to date with the number of trees planted on our grove page.

In 2020, £56,415 was donated to Trees for Life through the carbon offset option!

Ethical Superstore donated a further £829 to Trees for Life as part of our Amazon Prime Day alternative promotion (at the same time also paid our tax, treated our employees with respect and didn’t take advantage of our market share).
