5 minute vegan snacks
In the mood for a snack? It’s frustrating having to scour ingredient lists for that tell-tale non-vegan element. We all know to look out for honey, beeswax and gelatine but some animal products like shellac or casein can be harder to spot. The best route is to make your own snacks, but that can be tricky and time-consuming.

Here are five easy recipes from Ethical Superstore that won’t take more than five minutes each – and because you made these snacks yourself, you’ll know there’s nothing unwanted in there.
Vegan pate on rice cakes
Kallo Beetroot Veggie Cakes make a great base for a quick, low-calorie savoury snack. If you need more flavour, try adding your choice of vegan pate – we like Bonsan Beetroot & Horseradish Vegan Pate, matching the beetroot flavour and adding a little extra horseradish kick.
Walnut stuffed dates
After something sweeter? Grab some Zaytoun Palestinian Medjoul Dates and make a careful incision in each one to remove the pits – then add a Suma Organic Walnut to each one. Hey presto, a treat that’s soft and chewy with a crunchy centre. If you want to really indulge your sweet tooth, try rolling the dates in sugar.
Tahini no bake balls
If you love the taste of tahini, here’s a quick recipe for you that doesn’t even require any cooking. Combine a cup of Meridian Organic Light Tahini (or dark tahini for a nuttier flavour) with a ¼ cup maple syrup and ¾ cup coconut flour. Tweak the amounts if necessary until it’s the right consistency to be rolled up into bite-size balls. Delicious!
Homemade hummus
Another use for that tahini (if you’ve got any left over). Blend up a tin of Suma Organic Chickpeas with a clove of garlic, and add tahini and Zaytoun Extra Virgin Olive Oil to taste. Hummus is a perennial favourite from the Mediterranean and works great as a dip eaten with bread or crudités.

Oat energy balls
Suma Jumbo Organic Oats are a fantastic source of slow-release energy. Mix one cup with ½ cup peanut butter, ½ cup chopped-up dark chocolate and ⅓ cup of maple syrup for a delightful blend of sweet flavours. Add 1tbsp of those trusty chia seeds for extra nutritional value. Roll up into snack-sized balls and enjoy!
So you see, you don’t have to spend hours in the kitchen to make healthy, delicious snacks, even when sticking to purely vegan ingredients. It’ll be no struggle at all keeping yourself going until dinner time. Just don’t spoil your appetite.
