Cafedirect – Mayan Gold
Cafedirect is the UK’s largest 100% Fairtrade hot drinks company. All their products carry the Fairtrade mark meaning they are guaranteeing a fair and stable price to 38 grower organisations across 12 developing countries that Cafedirect work with. Not only that, Cafedirect reinvests at least a third of its products back into the businesses and communities of their growing partners; improving the lives of more than 1.8 million people around the world.
Cafedirect’s mission is to change lives and build communities through inspirational, sustainable business by making great tasting hot drinks direct from growers.
Mayan Gold is Cafedirect’s more recent addition to its single origin range of distinct flavours from unique places. Mayan Gold is a smooth and dark coffee from the vibrant Southern states of Chiapas and Oaxaca in Mexico.
The Mayan Gold coffee is purchased from the cooperative, Ejidos San Fernando. The cooperative was founded in 1984 and has grown from 17 farmers to a thriving community of 1,300 with a 40% female membership.
The San Fernando cooperative holds the same mission as Cafedirect which is to improve the lives and productivity of its producers. The cooperative has transitioned over the years, with its founding members in the 80s recognising a need to evolve their production methods to produce better quality coffee whilst farming in a way that respects their delicate ecosystems.
Through this, San Fernando has moved and transitioned from using conventional (non-organic) farming methods to slowly adapting and integrating natural fertilisers after seeing how climate change was damaging their crops and making them vulnerable to leaf rust. The cooperative discovered that incorporating combinations of replanting some of their crops at higher altitudes, practicing sustainable agricultural techniques and using natural organic inputs created the perfect conditions for creating a speciality quality coffee and were able to position themselves as leading specialists in growing organic coffee making them the perfect fit for Cafedirect.
Their new Mayan Gold coffee is organic and made from 100% Arabica beans. It has a sweet and smooth taste with notes of caramel, brown sugar and hazelnut with more subtle notes of maple syrup, milk chocolate, nuts, green apple and peanuts and has a strength of 5. Matt McDonald, green coffee buyer at Cafedirect described Mayan Gold as a “coffee that you can drink all day”.
