5 common laundry mistakes (and how to fix them)

We’ve all been there – pulling a favourite top out of the wash only to find it faded, stretched, or still not quite clean. Laundry seems simple, but a few small missteps can take a toll on your clothes. Here are five common laundry mistakes and how to fix them for fresher, longer-lasting garments.

Most laundry doesn’t need a hot wash

Did you know that washing your clothes in hot water can wear them out faster? Plus, it uses more energy. Unless you’re dealing with heavily soiled items (like towels or bedding), most everyday clothes can be washed on cooler temperatures. A cold or warm cycle is gentler on fabrics and helps colours stay vibrant longer.

Fix it: Use cold or warm water for most loads. It’s better for your clothes and your energy bill.

Using too much detergent

More laundry liquid doesn’t mean cleaner clothes. In fact, using too much detergent can prevent your clothes from properly rubbing against each other, which is essential for removing dirt. Plus, excess laundry detergent can leave a residue that makes fabrics feel stiff and look dull.

Fix it: Follow the recommended detergent amount based on your load size – and when in doubt, use less rather than more.

Overfilling the drum

It’s tempting to cram in that extra pair of jeans, but overloading your washing machine reduces its cleaning power. When the drum is too full, clothes can’t move around freely, which means they won’t get evenly cleaned.

Fix it: Fill the drum loosely. That way there’s enough space for your clothes to tumble and get properly cleaned.

Forgetting to clean your washing machine

Yes, even your washing machine needs a wash! Over time, detergent residue, fabric softener, and trapped moisture can lead to unpleasant odours and even mould growth.

Fix it: Every one to three months, run an empty hot water cycle with white vinegar or a washing machine cleaner to keep it fresh and hygienic.

Leaving wet laundry in the machine

We’ve all done it – getting distracted and leaving a load sitting in the washer for hours. Unfortunately, damp clothes left too long can develop a musty smell and even encourage mildew growth.

Fix it: Set a timer or use your machine’s end-of-cycle signal as a reminder. If you forget and the load smells funky, run it again with white vinegar or soda crystals to remove odours.

By avoiding these common laundry mistakes, you’ll not only extend the life of your favourite pieces but also enjoy fresher, cleaner results with every wash.
