Earth Day 2025
Today is Earth Day – an annual event aimed at raising awareness of environmental issues and improving the state of our planet. Since the birth of the modern environmental movement in1970 it’s been holding the powerful accountable and pushing for real change. It’s the biggest event in the ecological calendar, boasting over a billion participants in 2020.
Our power, our planet
2025 marks the 55th anniversary of Earth Day, and the theme this year is “our power, our planet”. The event is focused on renewable energy and specifically calling for global renewable energy generation to be tripled by 2030. As well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, use of renewable energy brings public health benefits, creates jobs, and is also the cheaper option in many cases.
Earth Day is also calling on lawmakers to:
- include climate literacy in school curriculums
- phase out fossil fuels
- invest in green energy infrastructure
It’s an ambitious goal, but there’s some reason to be optimistic. Great strides have already been made across the planet. Countries such as the US, China and India have made big commitments to the renewable energy cause. But there’s still more to do.
What can I do?
- Write to your local MP or lawmaker and demand action!
- Check out an event taking place near you – if there isn’t one, you could consider organising it yourself.
- Make a commitment to reduce your energy use.
Even small scale actions like cycling to work or donating old clothes to charity can make a difference – and you can spread the word on social media to encourage others to do the same.
