Go Microbead Free with Green People

With microbeads starting to be banned in a number of countries it’s becoming apparent that going microbead free is the way forward. Learn more about microbeads and how you can stop using them below.

What are Microbeads?

Microbeads are tiny bits of plastic found in face scrubs, toothpastes and abrasive cleaners among other common household products. Because microbeads are so small, when they are washed away they are not filtered out in water treatment plants, and that means they will eventually end up in our oceans. This causes an issue because plastic in the ocean ends up in the stomachs of marine life – fish, birds, turtles etc. This is damaging for the animals and for those of us who eat fish as the microbeads in their system end up on our plates!

Why are Microbeads so bad?

When sea creatures ingest or absorb microbeads their stomachs can get clogged up – which isn’t a nice thing at all – and the microbeads get passed along the food chain as mentioned earlier. They are impossible to remove from the oceans and they aren’t biodegradable. Recent studies show that microbeads can be found on almost every beach worldwide, on polar ice caps and almost everywhere in the oceans. These marine plastics are known to accumulate toxic contaminants at concentrations up to a million times than found in the surrounding seawater. None of this is good news.

What can you do?

While the UK government has already banned microbeads, this won’t take effect immediately, they are looking to phase them out by 2020. In the meantime you can choose alternative products that are microbread free! Luckily we have some great brands suchs as Green People that are committed to environmental sustainability and refuse to use microbeads in their products, opting for natural alternatives instead. You can view our range of microbead free products here, and we’ll always ensure our range is growing!
