Revamp your citrus peels: Clever uses for oranges and lemons

This Zero Waste Week, plastic-free cleaning tool brand Seep are helping you give orange and lemon peels a second life. Once you’ve enjoyed eating or squeezing these versatile fruits, don’t toss the peels out! Citrus peels contain natural oils that have antibacterial and degreasing properties, so you can create a natural, fragrant cleaning spray with them.

What you’ll need:

  • Orange or lemon peels
  • White vinegar
  • Water
  • Airtight container
  • Spray bottle

Step 1. Place the peels in an airtight container. You can use fresh peels or keep adding them to the container over time. Make sure to remove as much of the white pith as possible, as it can make the spray cloudy.

Step 2. Pour enough white vinegar over the peels to completely cover them. Close the container with the lid and let it sit in a cool, dark place for about two weeks. Shake the container occasionally to mix.

Step 3. After 2 weeks, strain the infused vinegar into a spray bottle. Add water in a 1:1 ratio (one part vinegar to one part water) for a milder solution.

Step 4. Use your new natural cleaning spray to clean countertops, sinks, glass and other surfaces. Avoid using on natural stone surfaces like marble or granite, as the vinegar can etch the stone.

It’s this simple to reduce waste by reusing citrus peels and avoid the use of harsh chemicals, while also leaving a fresh, citrusy scent in your home. This homemade spray is a versatile cleaner that’s great for daily use around the house!
