Earth Day 2026
April 22nd is Earth Day, a worldwide event dedicated to ecological conservation. Every year focuses on something different, but the overall aim remains the same – to be a global rallying point to advocate for climate action and environmental causes.
What’s new
This year the emphasis is on taking practical steps. Earth Day has played an important part in raising awareness of ecological issues, but awareness only goes so far – and an excess of information can be overwhelming and paralysing. The problems facing our planet and ecosystem are well documented. Now it’s time for action.
The theme for 2026 is “Our Power, Our Planet”. The Earth belongs not to governments and corporations, but to us as a species and as a community. It’s not just the big organisations that control the world, individual and collective power is real and can have a huge effect.
What power do I have?
Feeling helpless? Let’s start small. Here are some simple, everyday actions that anyone can do to help:
- Look at what you’re buying. Of course many things are essential, but think about what you can do without. Buying less is the most direct way to reduce waste.
- Prioritise reusable and long-lasting items over disposable, single-use ones.
- Reject fast fashion by repairing your damaged clothes instead of throwing them away.
- Recycle – and if your go-to products aren’t recyclable, look for alternatives that are.
They may seem small, but actions can build up and become regular habits, and before you know it you’ll be making a real difference.
Money talks
In our consumerist society, how and where you spend your money can have a lot of impact. Corporations may seem all-powerful but they’re nothing without their customers. Research the brands and retailers you buy from and see if they’re the kinds of businesses you want to support. Do they share your values? Or are they part of the problem?
Power to the people
There’s no substitute for getting yourself out on the streets and taking direct action. Earth Day events are happening all over the world – community cleanups, tree planting, political demonstrations and many more.
