Growing your own vegetables: a sustainable consumer’s dream

We’re excited to welcome LoofCo as our guest writers for this post, bringing their expertise on sustainable living to guide you through the rewarding journey of growing your own vegetables.

Growing your own vegetables is the sustainable consumer’s dream, but you might assume it’s impossible without a sizable patch of land and an encyclopaedic knowledge of farming. Don’t be put off so easily. Plenty of vegetables don’t require any special expertise and will grow just fine in pots or bags, no plot of earth required. You can make do with any small yard or balcony as long as it sees plenty of sunlight.

Choosing and preparing your containers

Grow-bags and planters are readily available but if you’re feeling especially eco-friendly you can re-use containers from around the house. If you’ve got any old dustbins, buckets and washing-up bowls you no longer need, they’ll work great. The bigger the container, the less often it’ll need watering, but even smaller things like tin cans can be used to grow herbs on a window ledge. Have your LoofCo Gardener’s Brush or Scrubbing Brush on hand to get them clean and ready for planting.

Best vegetables for container gardening

Not every vegetable will be happy growing in a container, but plenty of favourites will do just fine – carrots, potatoes, peas and tomatoes can all flourish with a bit of care, and that’s just for starters. Whatever you’re growing, it’s important to do your research and know when to sow each crop. Spinach, salad leaves and salad onions are best off planted early in the year; beetroot, potatoes and most herbs will do well in spring, while you’ll want to wait until summer for courgettes and carrots.

Harvesting and maintaining your sustainable garden

When the time comes to reap what you’ve sown, LoofCo’s Root Vegetable Scrubber is perfect for cleaning your produce. Like all LoofCo products, it’s made with sustainable loofah plant and coconut fibres and is fully plastic-free, recyclable and biodegradable. Recycle your brushes, reuse your containers and you can continue your journey into a more sustainable future.
