Fact of the week: The first Fairmined silver brought to the UK was from Peru.

Fairmined silver has been available in the UK for over a year now, brought here by the ethical jeweller CRED who also brought us Fairtrade and Fairmined gold three years ago. The launch of new Fairmined silver is absolutely a huge turning point in the future of ethical jewellery, up until a year ago the only ethical option was to use recycled silver but with the launch of new Fairmined silver you now have the option to buy Fairtrade jewellery, safe in the knowledge that miners in developing countries are benefiting.

A little more about CRED

CRED has worked with small scale metal miners for over ten years, particularly in Peru, Bolivia and Colombia. Their work includes working directly with miners to improve working standards in order to ensure safe working practices and a fair wage, also helping to develop communities and protecting the local environment. CRED have contributed more than £62,000 in Fairtrade premiums to mining communities in these countries, and hopefully that will only increase with the sale of jewellery made with Fairmined silver.
The silver first brought to the UK from Peru was mined at the Sotrami mine which is certified as Fairtrade and Fairmined. It is found in small quantities alongside the deposits of gold and therefore can receive the same Fairtrade and Fairmined certification.

Here’s hoping demand for Fairmined silver will grow so it will be easier for everyone to buy Fairtrade silver jewellery, and maybe we will stock it soon!
