Spotlight on eco nappies
The advent of the disposable nappy wasn’t just a huge step forward for hygiene and convenience – it’s been hailed as a breakthrough moment in feminism. Nearly 80 years ago, mother of three Valerie Hunter Gordon got so fed up washing and drying cloth nappies that she pioneered her own two-part system, now considered the forebear of the modern disposable nappy.
Suddenly nappies became more secure, easier to carry around and quicker to change. The change also meant fathers could more easily share the workload. But disposable nappies haven’t been an unalloyed benefit to the world. With growing awareness of the environmental impact of single-use plastic, we’re starting to question the things we throw away more and more.
Disposable?
The average baby raised in disposable nappies will go through 4,000-6,000 by the time they’re potty trained. The UK alone sees three billion nappies thrown away every year, most either being burned or going to landfill.
Some environmentalists advocate for a return to reusable nappies, a controversial measure that won’t sit right with everyone. Why not try something different? Founded by ex-Spice Girl Emma Bunton, Kit & Kin’s nappies are comfy and secure with great freedom of movement. The leakproof bits are made from an oxo-biodegradable material that breaks down in just 3-6 years.
