Great idea and appeared to wash my gardening clothes well but no scent as advertised and it clunks alarmingly loudly in the washing machine. Finally, the egg came apart after 12 or so washes, despite it being locked in. This happened to my Mum over 10 years ago. Sadly the newer design still no better. I have a washing bag by Terrawash, made in Japan. This was brilliant but no longer available. Back to the eco drawing board.

I’ve been using an eco egg for three years. It is an easy swap to make to reduce your plastic use and the chemicals going into the waterways. The machine needs to be less full than when using a traditional laundry detergent but this doesn’t make a significantly negative impact on my washing machine use.

I use fresh linen since I like some gentle fragrance to my washing. It cleans well although I add an oxygen bleach to my whites to keep them sparkling (much better than the bleaches used in mainstream laundry detergents). If anything is particularly heavily soiled I do a cold rinse or use washing up liquid to spot clean before washing in the machine.

The pellets last a god while; the fragrance goes quite quickly but I add a large splash of white vinegar and a few drops of essential oil to the fabric conditioner drawer of my machine which keeps everything fresh. And of course I hang my laundry outside where the sun and wind are the best natural bleach and fragrance!

Good for your clothes, good for the environment and good for your conscience.

I've been using a laundry egg for about a year now and highly recommend it. One of the easiest swaps you can make if you're looking to reduce your use of plastic and chemicals.
