Experience the convenience of Fair Trade Instant Lighting Charcoal, crafted in partnership with Traidcraft. Clean, quick, and mess-free, this charcoal is supplied in its own paper bag. Simply place it on the barbecue and light it. The certified responsibly sourced Instant Lighting Charcoal is specially treated, ensuring it lights first time, every time, without the need for lighter fluid. Say goodbye to charcoal-smudged fingers, kitchen surfaces, or food. As a rough guide, we recommend using one inner bag per average 17" kettle barbecue. Enjoy a hassle-free barbecue experience with this sustainable and user-friendly charcoal option.
Shrub encroachment from invader bush infringes prime agricultural land and is a major issue within the African agricultural industry. Shrub-encroached areas often suff¬er from reduced ground-water recharge which in turn a¬ffects plant and animal diversity.
The utilisation of the problem species for the manufacture of charcoal has been accepted as an environmentally friendly process. This improves rangelands and allows farmers to reclaim grazing land, resulting in the coppiced wood being turned into charcoal.
The invader bushes are harvested by the farmers. The coppiced timber is loaded into a kiln and carbonised over a 3-day period. The farmers are skilled in loading the kiln at the highest efficiency. Once the burn is complete and the kiln cooled, the charcoal is collected and sent to the factory where it is graded, bagged accordingly and shipped over to the UK.
Packaging is 100% recyclable.

Usage Instructions
- Remove one inner bag from outer and place on barbecue. (Do not empty charcoal out of inner bag.)
- Ensure your barbecue is placed on a firm, non-flammable, heat resistant surface.
- No additional lighting aids are required, the Instant Lighting Charcoal is specially impregnated to aid lighting.
- Hold a flame to the edge of the brown paper bag until lit.
- Depending on conditions it should take approximately 20 minutes for the flames to die down.
- Do not cook before the charcoal has a coating of ash.
In adverse weather the bag may not catch easily and re-lighting may be required until lit effectively. After about 10 mins separate the coals. If your charcoal appears to extinguish or smoke heavily before it is ready for cooking, try agitating or re-lighting with a long match or taper but be careful of flare up. Smoking charcoal imparts the distinct barbecue flavour. Shelter from wind if necessary. Occasionally during the cooking period, carefully agitate the charcoal to maintain heat if necessary.
Normal use is around 0.75kg of lumpwood per hour.
