You shop, you save 20% and we donate an item to the food bank – Food Bank Friday.
Be a part of Food Bank Friday 2022. The demand for food banks across the country has been rising year on year, and this was before the cost of living crisis started.
Now people are facing much higher prices for basic foods in the shops due to high inflation, on top of this energy prices have spiralled out of control meaning everyone is going to be paying more on their energy bills. For many this is simply unaffordable. We believe no one should be in the situation of having to decide whether to keep warm or feed their family.
Once again we will be offering you a discount on your shop and at the same time donating to the Newcastle West End Food Bank. With every order taken over £30 we will donate done item directly from our warehouse to the food bank, plus as an extra incentive we will be giving you 20% off!
(Begins Monday 21st November and ending 11:59pm 28th November)
We have been doing Food Bank Friday, our ethical alternative to Black Friday since 2015. Since we started doing this 32,339 items have been donated to the foodbank as a result with a value of over £49,000!
Last year 5,638 items donated with a value of £8,600, let’s see if we can beat that this year and help more people in need!
By doing this our customers will get the chance to help the Newcastle West End Food bank and also hopefully we’ll encourage people to think about others and perhaps make a donation to their own local food bank to help those in need this Christmas. If just a fraction of the money spent on unnecessary items this Black Friday could go to a better cause, this could make a huge difference to so many people who are struggling in the current tough times.
What we are donating
We have selected the products which will be donated to the Newcastle West End Food Bank based on what they need the most (these products may be changed depending on the demand from the Foodbank at the time we donate them). We will supply a mixture of these products to the Newcastle West End Food Bank. We donate products from our stock which go directly to the food bank and in to food parcels. It isn’t just food however, we have supplied, we also send things like soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant and period products.

Our suppliers are helping too!
As we know this year things are going to be tough for many people, with rising costs eating into the money people have to spend on food and everyday essentials we wanted to see if there was anything more we could do on top of our donations. So we called upon our wonderful suppliers to see if they could contribute with their own additional donation. And guess what, they didn’t come up short! We have had a fantastic response from them with multiple donations from our suppliers with everything from soap to chocolate!
Have a look at our blog to see all of the donations from generous suppliers like Divine Chocolate, Beauty Kitchen, LoofCo, The Natural Deodorant Co. Bio D, &Sisters, Flo, The Cheeky Panda, Faith in Nature and Marcel’s Soap!

What is Black Friday and where is it come from?
Black Friday has been around for many years in the US and was imported over here by Amazon who in 2010 launched a ‘Black Friday’ sale. In 2013 ASDA launched 'Walmart's Black Friday by ASDA' but it wasn’t until the following year that a large number of UK retailers jumped on the bandwagon launching their own campaigns. 2014 is probably the first year most people heard about it when police forces were called to shops across Britain to deal with the crowds and sometimes violent behaviour, as people surged into shops fighting over cut price TVs. Retailers such as Amazon have tried to condition customers into feeling they have to shop on Black Friday, offering reductions (which are actually usually paid for by small Amazon sellers, rather than Amazon themselves) and failing to invest profits back into our economy.
Our aim is to show there is an alternative, we can still offer a discount but more importantly we can help others who are in need and get people thinking about more important things than shopping!
John McCorry, chief executive at Newcastle West End Foodbank, said: “Black Friday is one of the busiest days in the shopping calendar and it’s easy for us to forget the daily struggles that many of us face. The West End of Newcastle is populated with large areas of poverty so we always encourage and welcome any form of support.”
“More and more families are being forced to use foodbanks with the number set to rise following the rise in the cost of living, many basic food items have risen by much more than the official inflation rate, combined with the huge rise in energy costs many more people are slipping into food poverty and need help."
“It’s fantastic that we can continue our partnership with Ethical Superstore having being chosen as the sole beneficiary for the eighth year. It’s through initiatives and kindness like this from local businesses and our volunteers that we can keep doing what we do.”
