Product Description

Barbeque essential!

It's that time of year already: the season of the sausage - barbecued that is - and this year’s hot topic is how to barbecue ethically. It’s not only meat versus meat-free sausages that ignites debate - there is the barbecue charcoal to consider if you want to achieve some proper green grilling.

Bag yourself a sack of BioRegional Homegrown Charcoal this summer, and not only is it estimated that CO2 emissions are reduced by 85 per cent compared to imported charcoal, but it's also FSC certified, so you can feel safe in the knowledge that you are supporting well-managed woodlands and the species that live within them. The pearl-bordered fritillary - the UK’s fastest declining butterfly species - will thank you for it, not to mention the nightingale and dormouse who all thrive in well-managed, coppiced woodlands.

Currently, the UK imports over 90% of its barbecue charcoal, and many of these imported charcoals are not FSC certified, which means there is no guarantee they aren’t responsible for the deforestation of virgin tropical forests and endangered mangroves. With BioRegional Homegrown Charcoal you can do your bit for the planet and enjoy your barbecue at the same time - ethical cooking doesn't get much simpler.

About BioRegional

BioRegional’s network production model involves the central coordination of a group of producers that allows them to act as a single supplier. The network supplies high quality charcoal, firewood and kindling to major retailers using the most local producer to each store. The concept of establishing a network of charcoal burners to access national retail markets was suggested by BioRegional Development Group in the early 1990s working with the British Charcoal Group, with support from WWF.

Good quality, easy to light and burns much better than supermarket charcoal. Very similar to restaurant grade charcoal. Being locally produced is also a big plus.

About BioRegional Charcoal Company

BioRegional Charcoal Company The UK imports over 90% of its barbecue charcoal, which contributes to the destruction of habitat and the loss of tropical rainforest. Here in the UK, many of our traditional woodlands lie neglected because there is little economic incentive to maintain them.

The BioRegional Charcoal Company Ltd was set up in 1995 to provide a new approach to the local production of wood products in the UK.

BioRegional work with a network of charcoal suppliers from woodlands up and down the UK, who produce their FSC certified HomeGrown charcoal and supply direct us, meaning that the charcoal we supply is sourced as from woodland less than half an hour from our distribution centre.
