Winner: Eco-Friendly Gift Of The Year 2007 (Gift Association)

ALSO AVAILABLE - PINK SUN JAR and BLUE SUN JAR (Moon Jar)

Made with a traditional Mason jar and high tech energy efficient lighting! Captured inside the jar are a highly efficient solar cell, rechargeable battery and low energy LED lamps. When the jar is placed in sunlight the solar cell creates an electrical current that charges the battery over a few hours. This energy is then used at night to power the three LED lamps inside the jar. The light is diffused by the frosted jar and give the appearance of sunlight emitting from the (warm coloured LED lights are used to give a more natural and warm light). You may have noticed that there is no switch on the sun jar - in fact there are no visible controls at all - there is a clever light sensor inside that automatically activates the lights when it gets dark or lights are turned out!*

Mason Jars are not only beautiful but by their very nature they are completely water tight - so the Sun Jar can happily be left outside in any weather conditions. A perfect garden light or night light for a kids bedroom. *there is an override switch inside the lid to turn off the light at night and conserve battery life.

Sun Jars need DIRECT sunshine to work! Leave the Sun Jar outside or in a sunny window in direct sunlight for several hours to charge, Electric lighting indoors is not bright enough.

I have just started using my sun jar and it is just brilliant! I'm a person that likes to leave a night-light on in the landing and its been on my conscience that this is not eco-friendly. However, the sun jar is extremely great at being a night light because it is not overwhelmingly too bright. i also use it in an evening when watching TV etc and it gives a lovely warm, romantic glow. the Button inside is very useful so that you can turn it off too if you don't want to waste the solar energy. i have also found that you don't need to have left it in a lot of sun for it to last all night. Lovely!
what would be nice is another longer hook so that you could hang it from the wall...

I bought a blue sun jar for my sister for Christmas, because their kitchen has many blue glass items in it. I thought the jar would be great to enhance the ambience. They loved it, and have shown all their friends, its becoming the must have thing. Brilliant for portable, free and stylish low level lighting at night and adding to any atmosphere. Cleaner and safer than candles and tee lights too. So i'm back for one for my mum now. Brilliant!

I bought my hubby a sun jar for Valentine's Day 2009 and he loves it.
I was a bit worried it wouldn't work but after a few hours charging in our English winter weather conditions it still emitted several hours of comforting, warm, yellow glow.
We think it's a fab present and have bought one for a friend's 40th later this year.
Would be great present for anyone scared of the dark, for children or for any green loving gadget freaks.
Deserves its 5 Star rating.

Jane asked this question on 29th May 2008

Q: How much light does it give out - would one be enough for a 'candlelight' dinner after dark?

A: If you make sure that the Sun Jar has a full charge then there should be enough light for romance! The best way to do this is to pop the sun jar's lid open, so that the solar cell is exposed to full sun for the whole day prior to the evening's entertainment. I'll do a quick test tonight, and let you know tomorrow. Thanks for the question!

Edit: I've tested, and I would say that you're good to go! :)
