About The Leakey Collection
This beautiful and unique collection is inspired by the natural beauty of Kenya , East Africa. Meticulously crafted by hand using elements from nature such as fallen wood, grass and ceramic, this attractive jewellery not only looks fabulous, but helps to protect the environment and provides opportunities and fair trade employment for Kenyan communities.
The story started in 2001, when the Maasi tribe of the East African Rift Valley suffered a devastating drought. Living amongst the Maasi people and wanting to assist by offering more than short term aid, designers Katy and Philip Leakey began the Leakey Collection to provide sustainable fair trade employment for local women, using traditional beading skills and nurturing local natural resources to enable families to begin to support themselves again. The Leakeys were able to bring this jewellery to the international market, and success has grown from there.
