So if you think it would be better to perhaps do something to make Christmas better for others this year we have a few ideas for you!<\/p>\n<h3>Invite someone you know to join you at Christmas<\/h3>\n<p>This is a fairly simple one and won\u2019t interrupt your Christmas plans! It\u2019s great to have all of your family round at Christmas but you may know someone, perhaps a neighbour, friend or colleague who is going to spend Christmas alone, so why not invite them along to join your Christmas day? It\u2019s always fun to have someone extra at Christmas and could mean the world to them, the more the merrier!<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Volunteering at a soup kitchen<\/h3>\n<p>This has always been a popular way to help out over Christmas, but what people often forget is that it\u2019s not just Christmas when help is needed, it\u2019s all year and particularly in the cold months of January and February.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s not just serving soup though! There are many ways to help over Christmas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crisis.org.uk\/get-involved\/volunteer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">find out more from Crisis<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/homeless-volunteer.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9869\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/homeless-volunteer-300x100.png\" alt=\"Google Trends Homeless Volunteer\" width=\"600\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/homeless-volunteer-300x100.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/homeless-volunteer-1024x341.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/homeless-volunteer.png 1176w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This image shows the volume of searches on Google for \u2018homeless volunteer\u2019 over the years, you\u2019ll notice there is a huge spike each December with people wanting to help, but it goes to show that help would be much appreciated all through the year!<br \/>\nIf you&#8217;d like to find out how you can volunteer throughout the year have a look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salvationarmy.org.uk\/volunteering\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Salvation Army website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Give to a Foodbank<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/foodbank-christmas.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-9883 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/foodbank-christmas-300x208.jpg\" alt=\"Foodbank Christmas\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/foodbank-christmas-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/foodbank-christmas.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>December is the busiest month for food banks with almost 50% more referrals from Citizens Advice and other organisations. Why not take part in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/foodbankadvent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#foodbankadvent<\/a> which is a reverse advent calendar, so instead of eating a chocolate from your advent calendar each morning (although technically you still could!) you donate an item to your local food bank every day in the run up to Christmas.<br \/>\nWe support our local foodbank the <a href=\"https:\/\/newcastlewestend.foodbank.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Newcastle West End Foodbank<\/a> with our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/charity\/food-bank-friday-2018\/\">Food Bank Friday campaign<\/a> and through checkout donations, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trusselltrust.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trussell Trust site<\/a> to find your local foodbank and all of the different things you can do to help.<\/p>\n<h3>Take a dog for a walk<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/products\/beco\/beco-soft-toy---teddy\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-9884 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/dog-walking-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Dog Walking\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/dog-walking-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/dog-walking.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>A Christmas morning walk is a family tradition for many, the cool crisp fresh air and picturesque covering of snow on the trees can\u2019t be beaten. OK so perhaps I\u2019m being optimistic on the snow covering and crisp fresh air\u2026<br \/>\nIf you\u2019ve got a dog then going for a walk is kind of a tradition every day, Christmas or not! But did you know could take a dog for a walk to help your local animal shelter? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rspca.org.uk\/whatwedo\/latest\/blogs\/details\/-\/articleName\/Blog_A_guide_to_voluntary_dog_walking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Find out more about volunteering for dog walking with the RSPCA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some dogs have come from very troubled backgrounds so by walking them you can help them socialise with people and other dogs which can help them find a new home. Walking dogs can also be hugely rewarding for yourself both mentally and physically.<br \/>\nOf course there is a lot more you can do to help out at your local animal shelter, if you don\u2019t have the time to spare you can always donate blankets, towels, toys, and treats.<br \/>\nFind out more ways to donate to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.battersea.org.uk\/support-us\/other-ways-give\/make-or-donate-goods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Battersea Dogs and Cats Home .<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Give Blood<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blood.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-9896 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/save-a-life-give-blood-300x91.jpg\" alt=\"Give Blood\" width=\"300\" height=\"91\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/save-a-life-give-blood-300x91.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/save-a-life-give-blood.jpg 952w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>It\u2019s not always easy for everyone to be able to donate money to charity or to be able to give up time to volunteer, so one great way of doing something amazing is to give blood. There is always a demand throughout the year so click the relevant country link to find out how you can give blood: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blood.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">England &amp; N Wales<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.welsh-blood.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the rest of Wales<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotblood.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scotland<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nibts.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Northern Ireland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Tell friends you don\u2019t want presents!<\/h3>\n<p>OK bear with me here\u2026 if you are often stuck with ideas of what to get someone every year, they probably have the same problem when picking a present for you. So why not pick a charity you would like people to donate to on your behalf, this way you don\u2019t get lumbered with that really odd present you didn\u2019t want and don\u2019t have to pretend to be delighted to see it! Sometimes you simply don\u2019t really need anything, how many times have you been asked what you would like for Christmas and you really can\u2019t think of anything that you feel you really need.<br \/>\nWell there is an easy solution, simply let all of your family and friends who normally buy you presents that you\u2019d prefer them to give a donation to your favourite charity instead.<\/p>\n<h3>Get your work involved<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/category\/Barber-Shop\/Urban-fades-barbershop-2301282033430997\/http:\/\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9893\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/urban-fades-barbershop-283x300.jpg\" alt=\"Urgan Fades\" width=\"283\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/urban-fades-barbershop-283x300.jpg 283w, https:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/urban-fades-barbershop.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/><\/a>This can really make a difference if you have a business behind you! You can of course encourage your work to make donations but you could do potentially do something different and use the skills from your place of work to help. What\u2019s more it can be great publicity for your business so everybody wins!<br \/>\nA great example is Urban Fades, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chroniclelive.co.uk\/news\/north-east-news\/south-shields-barbers-been-offering-14049855\">barbers in South Shields<\/a> who gave free haircuts to homeless people last Christmas!<\/p>\n<p>If you have a skill, specialist knowledge or are simply good at what you do, perhaps you can share this and use what you can do to help others!<\/p>\n<h3>Get your Children into the spirit<\/h3>\n<p>Looking forward to Christmas and making it a fun time for yourself is certainly nothing to feel guilty about, but over the years as you grow up it becomes less about you and more about others. Remember back to when you were young, Christmas was an amazingly exciting time and in your mind it was probably entirely centred around yourself and what presents you would get!<br \/>\nSo it\u2019s a great idea to get your children to see the world doesn\u2019t just revolve around them, Christmas is about helping other people as well. They are too young to be buying presents so why not get them to make presents for family members, this gets them to think about others, and what they would like, not just which toys <em>they<\/em> want for Christmas.<\/p>\n<h3>Give a Christmas Gift<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rotaryshoebox.org\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-9886 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/shoebox-300x167.jpg\" alt=\"Shoebox Campaign\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/shoebox-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/shoebox.jpg 896w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Send a gift to someone living in poverty around the world. The idea is simple, fill a box with toys, school supplies and treats and make someone\u2019s Christmas! <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salvationarmy.org.uk\/christmas-present-appeal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Visit the Salvation Army website<\/a> for more information or&nbsp; have a look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rotaryshoebox.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rotary Shoebox Scheme<\/a> who ship the boxes to Eastern Europe and have sent over a million since the scheme was started.<\/p>\n<h3>Make a Donation to a Charity<\/h3>\n<p>If you prefer to just do something a little more straightforward you can simply make a donation to a charity this Christmas.
