However whilst compliant boyfriends, husbands and prospective suitors rack their brains over the next couple of weeks to find that special gift to make their beloved\u2019s knees turn to jelly, there will always be ones who forget, those who are obliged to rush off to purchase a last minute gift, and the few who risk social outcasting and feminine rage by spurning the commercialisation of Valentine\u2019s fever and refusing to indulge.<\/p>\n<p>But would such a rage be justified? I rather suspect that anyone out there who avoids Valentine\u2019s Day only dares to do it after careful and sensitive discussions with their other halves. And does a last minute gift really count for anything? I can\u2019t help but think that a well thought out gift planned with love and given as a surprise is a treat, and anything else is jumping on a bandwagon&#8230;but perhaps that just makes me a hard girl to please.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>So when I really ponder the issue, I think that when it comes to the crunch, what women <em>really <\/em>want for Valentine\u2019s day is for chaps to <em>want <\/em>to make a fuss about us&#8230; Perhaps this is akin to wanting my boyfriend to <em>want <\/em>to do the washing up, but I don\u2019t think it\u2019s too much to ask&#8230;is it&#8230;?!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/lovers-in-the-park.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-795\" title=\"lovers-in-the-park\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/lovers-in-the-park.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"244\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a>In all honesty I think that the majority of the population find the hype and expectations a bit too much, but if you ask around you\u2019ll find that most people\u2019s favourite Valentine\u2019s day memories are of nice walks they\u2019ve been on, picnics they\u2019ve eaten or moments they have shared rather than receiving a pricey gift. Perhaps demanding an enduring memory is even more alarming for the increasingly anxious reader, but take it from a girl who spent most of last Valentine\u2019s day on an uncomfortable long-distance train journey across central Asia \u2013 if you like your other half enough to actually be with them, you can have a good day together wherever you are.<\/p>\n<p>But back to the question of gifts, I really do believe that the classic favourites are the best. I\u2019m a bit of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/ethical-gifts\/flowers\/\">flowers <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/ethical-gifts\/chocolate-gifts\/\">chocolate<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/category\/wine-beer-and-spirits\/\">wine <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/ethical-gifts\/jewellery\/\">jewellery <\/a>enthusiast myself so I\u2019m fully in favour of Tommy\u2019s blog, the Bloke&#8217;s Guide to perennial Valentine\u2019s favourites \u2013 and buy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/tags\/fair-trade\/\">fair trade<\/a>, because that shows that you\u2019re thinking when you\u2019re buying \u2013 but don\u2019t buy us a present because you feel you have to guys, buy one because you want to \u2013 please!<\/p>\n<p>photos from flickr: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/ramyalaa\/2267576810\/\">Ramyalaa <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/austinhk\/3086934691\/\">austinhk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The question of what women really want is (or ought to be) at the forefront of men\u2019s minds in the lead-up to Valentine\u2019s day.
