\"The<\/a><\/dt>\n<\/dl>\n

Ecover<\/a> is one of the true pioneers of the ethical products movement having recently hit its 25th birthday, famous for its green cleaning products<\/a> and for building the world\u2019s first \u201cecological factory\u201d in Malle, Belgium, in 1992.\u00a0 When I was invited by Ecover to visit in November, I couldn\u2019t pass on the opportunity \u2013 it almost felt like receiving a golden ticket to see Willy Wonka\u2019s chocolate factory (if only the Wonka Bar was Fairtrade!)

\nMy visit included tours of the original factory in Belgium and Ecover\u2019s newest factory near Boulogne-sur-Mer<\/a>, France.\u00a0 Entering the factories, it feels more like you\u2019re entering a cathedral than a cleaning products production plant.\u00a0\u00a0 Building materials are predominately recycled and recyclable, and factory waste water is recycled and returned for use in the factory using a windmill pump.\u00a0 In the original factory, the grass-covered roof has insulating properties which saves energy and supports a wildlife garden. The roof was included by the architects as a functional piece of the designs. The factory also included grass banks and reed beds around the factory to help it blend into the countryside.<\/p>\n

Inside, Ecover has been hard at work developing the future of eco friendly cleaning products<\/a>.
\nI was also able to preview their new products for 2009.\u00a0 Ecover\u2019s refill system, which accounts for over 91,000 litres of refill a year saving tons of plastic going to landfills, is being re-launched in a more ecological and cost effective \u201cbag-in-box\u201d format \u2013 sort of like box wine!\u00a0 The new refill system features lighter packaging and less spillage and waste,\u00a0 a big improvement perfect for home or office\/small business use.<\/p>\n

Ecover has also reformulated its range of hard surface cleaners with pioneering biosurfactant ingredients.\u00a0 Biosurfactants are what make Ecover products uniquely ecological because they are produced through a biological process rather than a chemical one.\u00a0 Products are manufactured from vegetable oil (rapeseed) and glucose (sugar) by bacteria or yeast. The new formulations have been 7 years in the development and are fully renewable, biodegradable, low in toxicity, and involve reduced transport of ingredients.\u00a0 The new hard surface cleaners carry the Good Housekeeping seal of approval and claim to clean as effectively as non eco brands such as Flash.<\/p>\n
