The organisation was founded in 1979 on Christian principles and has two components, the retail side which sells Fairtrade products in the UK and Traidcraft Exchange which is a development charity – this allows Traidcraft to do its utmost to help producers in developing countries.

The trading arm of the organisation, Traidcraft plc, sources products from over 30 developing countries, aiming to tackle poverty by creating a market for fair trade producers and showing the commercial viability of the fair trade model. Traidcraft also helped to set up Cafedirect, the first Fairtrade coffee brand in the UK (you can read about them here) and continues to promote Fairtrade products.

Traidcraft exchange was set up on 1986 and enables poor producers in Africa and Asia to grow their businesses and find markets to engage effectively in trade – currently they manage 14 major projects that directly benefit around 350,000 and indirectly 1.4million. The organisation also lobbies governments and companies so that trade rules and market access for small organisations in the developing world can be improved, further helping people in poverty stricken areas.

Recently Traidcraft has introduced the world’s first Fairtrade certified household cleaning range and is accredited as a living wage employer.
