{"id":445,"date":"2008-11-03T10:34:05","date_gmt":"2008-11-03T09:34:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/?p=445"},"modified":"2008-11-03T14:07:07","modified_gmt":"2008-11-03T13:07:07","slug":"go-one-better","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/transport\/go-one-better\/","title":{"rendered":"Go One Better!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_447\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/go1better_3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-447\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-447\" title=\"go1better_3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/go1better_3.jpg\" alt=\"and the winner is...\" width=\"250\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-447\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">and the winner is...<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The trouble with arguing with myself is whilst I often win, I almost certainly lose too.<br \/>\nThis morning\u2019s argument was simple, bike or car.<br \/>\nThe bike has much to recommend it; I\u2019d arrive at work more alert and energised.\u00a0 I\u2019d have saved on the cost of fuel, both in terms of cash and environmental impact.\u00a0 I\u2019d have been able to smile at the folk at the bus stop without worrying about looking smug.\u00a0 My heart would thank me in the coming years and I\u2019d hopefully reduce the amount of fabric I\u2019d someday be forced to consume.<br \/>\nThe car however offers protection from the elements (and potentially from other, less conscientious, road users) and, until recently at least, some entertainment too.\u00a0 I say until recently not because the car radio has malfunctioned, or been stolen, but simply because I\u2019ve lost the will to tune in.\u00a0 The constant cycle of credit crunch assessment rotated with outrage over licence payers\u2019 money squandered on a poor excuse for comedy leaves me cold.<!--more--><br \/>\nAs I get the bike from the shed I don\u2019t feel the full satisfaction of a sound choice that I\u2019d expected.\u00a0 I try my best to avoid entangling myself in yet another row with me as to whether it would be the worst sort of positive discrimination if broadcasting some sort of inspiring news story became mandatory.\u00a0 The exhilaration of a decent downhill coupled with the adrenalin of navigating the roundabout which follows provides some escape.\u00a0 As the route flattens and the rhythm settles the thoughts return.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s such a clich\u00e9 that I\u2019m reluctant to type it, but I want to be part of the solution not part of the problem.\u00a0 I want to campaign, I want to challenge, I want to improve, but I don\u2019t want to be self-righteous or patronising.\u00a0 As I pedalled on an idea begins to take shape. It still needs some work but I wanted to share it, I make myself a promise &#8211; and in an effort to make sure I remember it &#8211; I give it a name.<br \/>\nI promised myself that from now on -even though the weather will inevitably get worse, and daylight hours less &#8211; I would every week \u2018Go One Better\u2019.\u00a0 As a minimum I\u2019ll substitute one car journey for a greener alternative.\u00a0 I read somewhere recently that the UK\u2019s average car journey is 6.8 miles.\u00a0 If I only manage to cut one such journey a week out I\u2019ll drive around 354 miles less per year (with my car that\u2019s a full tank of fuel and a bit, less).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_448\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/go1better.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-448\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-448\" title=\"go1better\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/go1better.jpg\" alt=\"next stop please\" width=\"250\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-448\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">next stop please<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Can you find a way to \u2018Go One Better\u2019 too?\u00a0 Car use may not be the issue for everyone, but could you get off the bus a stop early?\u00a0 Or on it a stop later? This doesn\u2019t have to be just about the environment, it\u2019s about well being too.\u00a0 When I first began to commute by bike the thing which I noticed most was just how much better it felt to take on the day after using my limbs a bit more.<br \/>\nMaybe I shouldn\u2019t restrict myself to just transport.\u00a0 Where else can I \u2018Go One Better\u2019?\u00a0 I need to look more closely at what I eat, my wardrobe, what I choose to recycle and what I try to get more use from.\u00a0 Perhaps I can make more sensible choices about my energy consumption too.<br \/>\nI\u2019m hoping I won\u2019t be alone.\u00a0 I understand this isn\u2019t in itself a solution to the vast global challenges we face but we do need to begin to make a deliberate choice to change.\u00a0 For me I hope that by starting with a promise which I can keep I\u2019ll build a good habit.\u00a0 What do you think?\u00a0 Will you pledge to \u2018Go One Better\u2019 too?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The trouble with arguing with myself is whilst I often win, I almost certainly lose too.
