Let me enlighten you with a simple <strong>recipe for the perfect compost<\/strong>, to encourage you on your green-living way.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>For this recipe, to create healthy, nutrient filled compost, you&#8217;ll need<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/products\/garden-trading\/garden-trading-compost-pail\/\">food waste bin<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/products\/okt\/kitchen-caddy---4-5l\/\">kitchen composter<\/a><\/li>\n<li>some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/products\/nether-wallop\/nether-wallop-100-biodegradable-leaf-sack\/\">leaf sacks<\/a><\/li>\n<li>an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/products\/straight\/compost-converter-330-litre\/\">outdoor compost bin<\/a><\/li>\n<li> a garden with some plants and trees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This recipe will take a few minutes of time here and there for the next few months to complete and is suitable for a tub or two of compost.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Carbon &#8211; Nitrogen Ratio<\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"The Perfect Compost\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4126\/5050536925_2d50aa85c2_m.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"240\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The ideal compost contains a combination of carbon and nitrogen, about <strong>30: 1 Carbon: Nitrogen<\/strong>.\u00a0 This ratio is really important for successful compost. All waste products contain varying amounts these nutrients, some higher in one over the other.\u00a0 If an ingredient for your compost (a waste product) has more carbon than this ratio, (i.e. 50 : 1, Carbon: Nitrogen) it&#8217;s known as a &#8220;brown&#8221; ingredient.\u00a0 If a waste product has less carbon than this ratio, (i.e. 15 : 1) it&#8217;s known as a &#8220;green&#8221; ingredient.\u00a0 You need a good mixture of brown and green ingredients to make healthy compost.\u00a0 It helps the microorganisms present in the compost to digest the compost and break it down properly.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a table inspired by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homecompostingmadeeasy.com\/index.html\">Home Composting Made Easy<\/a> of some possible ingredients for your compost and their own carbon &#8211; nitrogen ratio.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Table of Carbon - Nitrogen Compost Ingredients\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4147\/5050536649_7766039418.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"260\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Remember that the ratio you&#8217;re heading for is <strong>30 : 1<\/strong>.\u00a0 Be careful when adding ingredients like woodchip or sawdust as these are very carbon heavy.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll need to compensate other ingredients if you add too much.\u00a0 Imagine adding 10 times as much flour to a victoria sponge cake &#8211; the cake won&#8217;t be very edible.\u00a0 Likewise, only adding fresh scraps of food and nitrogen heavy ingredients like manure can equally have negative effects.\u00a0 Imagine tripling the amount of butter in your cake &#8211; it&#8217;s just not good for you!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leaves: One of the Tastiest Ingredients<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Leaf Sacks\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4133\/5051255626_b0cfc1ceab_m.jpg\" alt=\"Leaf Sacks\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leaf Sacks<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One of the most important staple ingredients for your compost is leaves.\u00a0 Most of us have been wondering what to do with the plethera of leaves flung all across our garden, so here are two suggestions for you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Let the leaves begin to rot and turn into mulch and add to your compost straight away<\/li>\n<li>Begin stockpiling &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/products\/nether-wallop\/nether-wallop-100-biodegradable-leaf-sack\/\">storing up bags<\/a> of dry leaves in a holding area for later in the year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Leaves are very rich in nutrients and apparently an earthworm&#8217;s favourite food.\u00a0 Earthworms digest the leaves and leave an even richer solution, perfect for compost.\u00a0 Start bagging leaves up for later in the year, to add to your compost throughout the winter and spring.\u00a0 Leaves perfectly complement kitchen waste and when added to a compost bin, the pile heats up and decomposes quickly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Not to Add<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are of course a few &#8216;no-no&#8217; ingredients, that will taint your compost.\u00a0 Try to avoid ivy and dandelions, as these are persistant weeds that may take root in the compost.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t put tomato plants in the compost either, these can carry diseases.\u00a0 Avoid adding cooked rice, dairy products, magazines or other glossy printed paper, meat and oils.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Getting the Temperature Right<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Great compost needs heat.\u00a0 Unlike cakes, the ingredients in compost react together, creating the heat themselves.\u00a0 This provides the atmosphere that the microorganisms need to break down the contents of the compost.\u00a0 To get to the right temperature, you&#8217;ll firstly need a good combination of &#8216;green&#8217; and &#8216;brown&#8217; ingredients.\u00a0 Moisture is also really important &#8211; if your compost heap is dry, try adding a bit of water to the mix.\u00a0 You can also try adding a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/products\/just-green\/just-compost-accelerator\/\">Compost Accelerator<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/products\/straight\/all-purpose-compost-activator\/\">Compost Activator<\/a> to encourage activity and breakdown of the waste.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What else?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are many other tips and tricks out there for great compost.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve heard that used <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/products\/equal-exchange\/equal-exchange-organic-medium-roast--ground-coffee-227g\/\">coffee grounds<\/a> work well as accelerators for compost, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalsuperstore.com\/products\/cafedirect\/teadirect\/\">used tea<\/a> too.\u00a0 We would love to hear from you on this &#8211; what tips and tricks do you use for great compost?\u00a0 Any big mistakes you&#8217;ll never make again?\u00a0 Anything you&#8217;ve learnt you didn&#8217;t know before?<\/p>\n<p>We look forward to hearing from you&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wondering about how to start composting, but don&#8217;t know very much?\u00a0 Annoyed that your compost isn&#8217;t breaking down properly?\u00a0 Too many leaves in your garden this Autumn that you don&#8217;t know what to do&#46;&#46;&#46;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":39,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[113],"tags":[148],"class_list":["post-3083","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-living-the-green","tag-recipe"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.7 -
