Burns Night.\u00a0 I\u2019ve never participated in this before, but as far as I can tell, it\u2019s aaaall aboot the Haggis.\u00a0 There\u2019s a musical entrance for the haggis, a long address to the haggis and even a whisky toast to the haggis.\u00a0 A few other characters get a mention in the Burns Night proceedings, namely the \u201classies\u201d, the Queen, even good old Robert Burns get\u2019s a toast or two, but none receive the attention that the haggis does.\u00a0\u00a0 It seems rather obvious to me, that cheeky Mr Haggis has stolen the limelight from noble Mr Burns…<\/p>\n

So what is it about that famous dish that Scots rave about?\u00a0 I\u2019m originally from southern England, and I\u2019ve never sung over my shepherd\u2019s pie or recited a poem about my fish and chips, it doesn\u2019t seem necessary.\u00a0 Perhaps you get stranger the further North you live?\u00a0 Perhaps…\u00a0 Or perhaps the Scottish are much better at finding reasons to celebrate with one another and remembering their heritage.\u00a0 I\u2019m certainly all for that, what could be better on a dark January evening than spending time with friends, eating a good meal and celebrating where you came from?<\/p>\n

So this Mr Haggis fella and this Mr Burns bloke, maybe they\u2019re pretty good at getting us to get together?\u00a0 Maybe we all should have a go this Burns night, Scottish or not, and ask some friends around to enjoy some time together.\u00a0 Are you with me?!<\/p>\n

If you are, here\u2019s what we\u2019ll do:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. We\u2019ll call up a few friends and set a time and the date (Burns Night is 25th January)<\/li>\n
  2. We\u2019ll cook up some veggie haggis (a bit more acceptable), snack on some Scottish food<\/a> to get us in the mood, and buy some whisky<\/a> for the toasts.<\/li>\n
  3. We\u2019ll learn a bit of Scottish.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Now, I can\u2019t tell you who to invite, but I can let you know that the Vegetarian Society have a good recipe on their website<\/a>, and as for the lingo, Wikipedia have got just about all you need to know<\/a>.<\/p>\n
