This year the event starts in London before crossing the channel and heading south to Marseilles. 3 weeks and 3500 kilometres later, the remaining riders finish on the Champs-Elys\u00e9es in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>Now, we&#8217;re not going to analyse the actual event &#8211; somewhere there will be an article that discusses how environmentally unfriendly all the support vehicles are and how much carbon is emitted by the helicopters used by the camera crews &#8211; so we&#8217;ll just contend ourselves (for now) with the fact that it&#8217;s a celebration of the world&#8217;s most influential invention.<\/p>\n<p>Tour de France bikes are normally constructed out of exotic composite materials, aluminium alloys and titanium, which are neither inexpensive to produce nor particularly sustainable. So, how about manufacturing them out of a material that is both sustainable <em><strong>and<\/strong> <\/em>renewable?<\/p>\n<p>Which brings us to a neat little story about a Californian bicycle manufacturer, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calfeedesign.com\/\">Craig Calfee<\/a>, who is about to set off for Africa to look at the viability of manufacturing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/local\/la-me-bamboo18jun18,0,7672267.story?page=1&amp;coll=la-home-center\">bamboo bikes in Ghana<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bp2.blogger.com\/_9ADVdtPEfDA\/Rn_bnwaCAyI\/AAAAAAAAACQ\/PCv8mCXvj2c\/s320\/smallbamboo.png\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: left; cursor: pointer\" rel=\"\u201dlightbox\u201d\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If there were an award for &#8220;Bicycle with lowest carbon footprint&#8221; (least amount of carbon dioxide emissions in the production of the frame), this frame would win, hands down.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now, at $2500 dollars for the frame it&#8217;s not really <strong>affordable<\/strong>, so the bikes for Ghana use bamboo lashed together  with hemp fiber.<\/p>\n<p>When bamboo is treated it forms a very hard wood which is both light and exceptionally tough.  Some of the larger species can grow at a rate of over 1 meter per day, making it particularly suitable for use as a renewable crop.<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"border: 1px solid #c5c5c5; padding: 1em; background: #eeeeee none repeat scroll 0% 50%; margin-top: 0.5em; font-size: 100%; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 1em; width: 92%; -moz-background-clip: -moz-initial; -moz-background-origin: -moz-initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: -moz-initial\"><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bp1.blogger.com\/_9ADVdtPEfDA\/Rn_b0gaCAzI\/AAAAAAAAACY\/fz1eb1qDV3c\/s320\/30591623small.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: right; cursor: pointer\" title=\"a Calfee bamboo frame\" alt=\"a Calfee bamboo frame\" height=\"135\" width=\"180\" \/>The prototype bike was built entirely without the need for power tools, which is an essential requirement to facilitate easy manufacture in developing countries.
