Most people enjoy chocolate, but it's no treat for the hundreds of thousands of labourers who pick the cocoa pods that go into some of our favourite sweets. Much of the world's chocolate comes from West Africa, where cocoa production is an enormous part of the economy. In Ghana, 40% of the country's export revenues come from the sale of cocoa. Unfortunately, very little of the profit goes to the farmers who grow the cocoa beans. But Fairtrade is changing that.
Fairtrade cocoa offers farmers an opportunity to make a real living, as the Fairtrade Certified production criteria guarantee a minimum price. Fairtrade provides consumers a trusted guarantee that no forced or abusive child labour was used in the making of their products.
