Q: How do you encourage bee to nest in this nester? I have had 'bee & ladybird nesters in my garden for getting on for 5 years now but never a bee of ladybird seems to visit them, although I have lots of both visit my garden
A: Tips for attracting bees to nest:
Locate the nester low, or on the ground in a sheltered position in dappled sunlight – under a hedgerow or adjacent to a wall line is ideal and close to flight lines.
Find some material from an old mouse nest to put inside
Alternatively, find some material from an old Bumble Bee nest to put inside
It is helpful to place a stone or piece of wood near the entrance hole to act as a ramp/landing platform for the bees
Early in spring you may see the large queen bumble bees carrying eggs, seeking a suitable nest site. It is possible to carefully capture these queens and introduce them to the nest.
In the nest, place a shallow dish with 5-1 sugar-water inside. Put a piece of twisted paper in the entrance hole for 24 hours – if she likes it she will start the laying process.
I hope this helps!
Marty.
