ReviewsAfter searching online I couldn't believe how inexpensive they were compared to any other bokashi bins. When they first arrived, the lids didn't find on properly (which makes a nonsense of keeping them airtight). I initially went down the thought-spiral of "well that's what you get when you order the cheapest" - but thankfully, because I think highly of the Ethical Superstore, I decided to email them. They arranged for 2 replacement lids to be sent out immediately. I honestly didn't think that would solve the problem but it totally did and I'm delighted! Yes, there are more robust models out there but they are mostly double the price or more. I haven't had a single issue apart from that initial hiccup and I've been using them for over 2 months. I wonder whether some of the leakage issues could be to do with people not assembling them correctly? I haven't had a single issue in that regard, and they seem to be very functional. Also very happy with the customer service.
Sorry to say that the lid has split on one of the bins rendering it useless. I was conscious that these were at the cheaper end of the scale. I'm going to look for a sturdier replacement, ideally with spare parts so I don't end up with a lump of redundant plastic again.

Have just filled the first bokashi bin that is now outside, and have just started the second bin. Will have to wait a couple of weeks before I can see the results. However, given the different kitchen waste that went into the bin, there was no smell at all, and I have been using the run off to nourish my plants. I'm delighted with the bins as standard compost bins take ages to break down waste.

Efficient and timely, the product is as advertised.
We bought this set 3 years ago and the first thing to say is that I haven't found it priced better.
We put all of our veg peelings straight into our compost heap so this bin is only for dairy, bread, animal and cooked food waste. We have reduced our meat as we now don't eat anything but occasional fish (and were going off that too!) we also have very little food waste (control our portion size, freeze portions or eat next day!). It therefore takes us about 6 months to fill one bin and so it can sit for 5 months 'festering' before we do anything with it!
The liquid is good feed and the 'solids' get added to the compost heap.
Not experienced the leaky tap problem on either bin but would suggest putting a small jam jar underneath it. Keep any smells down by ensuring you have sufficient bran working in it ( we layer it in and top up if going slimy or starting to smell!)
Take on the potential downsides but don't let it put you off. Best wishes and happy composting :o)

although this is plastic bin, I found it very good as a starter at-home composter

I too had an issue with a leaky tap but found that it was easily resolved by emptying, cleaning and reassembling the unit. We’re on around our 3rd cycle now, and experience has taught us to chop food up small and to keep on top of draining the liquid as per the instructions. It’s made a huge difference to the waste going into my bin which was the main point of the exercise for me, and the liquid (properly diluted) makes an amazing food which has my houseplants looking fantastic. Still waiting on the compost itself to be properly ready, but signs are good. Would definitely recommend you give it a go.

Had mine a couple of months now. No leaks but not sure how quickly the compost is breaking down. But no smells - so something is working!

We have one bin which leaks and the other seems ok. For the system to work as intended, you really need to use both though. We have been giving the system a fair trial as we bought it almost a year ago. We have raised garden beds and planters so cannot bury it in trenches like you are supposed to - we just add to our normal compost bin. I have recently stopped adding cooked foods and meat as I didn't feel these were breaking down quickly enough. Overall, I think it's a good idea but I don't think it is quite what I had hoped - and the leaky tap issue really needs to be addressed.
I really wanted this to work well, as I'd been meaning to get one for years, but I'm afraid I have to agree with a previous reviewer regarding the tap. I ordered one bin. I filled it with food waste, covered it with bokashi bran, sealed it and left it to ferment for 2 weeks. Two things happened; one, the food didn't really seem to be breaking down anymore than it would without the bran, and two, the tap leaked, leaving a constant puddle on the kitchen floor. I contacted Ethical and they got the manufacturers to send me a new tap. This leaked just the same. The bin is now in the garden, acting as a stopover between the kitchen and the compost bin. Although the food doesn't break down any more quickly, at least the residue from the leaking tap is washed away by the rain. Sadly, not a success in the kitchen. Shame.

First batch seems to be fermenting ok, lots of juice to feed plants, BUT both bins have leaked (swapped waste to the second bin after a few days to try to stop) around the spigot which is really frustrating. Tap is screwed in as tight as possible, needs a better seal. And the lid needs to be weighted down or it pops up as seems to be slightly twisted, so a bit disappointed.

Still learning to use these. Like the 'juice' it produces every few days, with which I feed my plants. NICE!
