Verified product owner WOW! I recieved my kettle in the post last week and since I really feel it has made such a difference! It is so economical because you choose how much water goes through and the 'cup' measurements are very accurate. Plus it boils very fast so energy efficient. There is an extremely useful part to it where when you do want to boil a whole kettle full you can twist the plunger around so that it fills up completely from the water holder which means you don't have to hang around. I really can't believe how great it is and at such a great price. I would recommend this to anyone who is either an experiences, dab hand at being eco-friendly and energy efficient but also to any people who are just beginning to stretch out to 'being greener'.

Our family is committed to eco-friendly solutions to everyday life, so the eco-kettle fitted the bill perfectly. We've had the kettle for over 12 months now and we really like it. It boils the right amount of water quickly and has indubitably saved electricity and money. On the down side; my wife can find it heavy when full, the cup measures are for cups and not mugs (which is what we tend to use). We've also learnt to keep the kettle tlted to release steam whilst moving between cups otherwise it tends to spit hot water out of the spout. A small design change could resolve this. Overall we very happy with the product.

This Kettle doesn't win any awards for being aesthetically pleasing (particularly as our previous defunct kettle was a brushed metal type) but it does deliver on functionality. Yes it's quirky and you do need to get used to how it operates but we all need to revisit our day-to-day lifestyles and take responsibility for saving energy and water and this seems a small sacrifice to make. It does a great job and so far we've had no problems (if you have researched this kettle you'll have seen that there have been apparent reports, albeit of an earlier version/model, of issues regarding pouring). Some folk have said that it's a little on the heavy side but frankly we've not found that to be the case - perhaps this is because our previous kettle was metal-bodied. We'd heartily recommend.

My eco kettle lasted less than a year. The lid has to withstand a lot of pressure and it came apart regularly. It was used daily by family, including 3 kids. Eventually part of the lid broke and the kettle wouldn't work anymore. Nice idea, poor design. I wouldn't buy another.

Verified product owner Bought this kettle about 18 months ago and it has been nothing but hassle. Problems include: Steam coming out of the handle when picked up and burning hand, Water coming out of the lid when pouring, Hot water is rapidly cooled by the cold water in the inner vessel so having to boil kettle multiple times to get a hot cuppa, lid no longer fits properly as it couldn't withstand the pressure of the valve mechanism pressing up on it, final straw was when the valve mechanism on the lid broke stopping a full kettle of water from being boiled. Just resigned it to the bin and got the old kettle out of the cupboard. I think if you sensibly only boil the water required in a normal kettle you're just as well off and without the complications and EXPENSE of an eco-kettle. Ahh hot tea again at last.
Staff response- since the model being reviewed was purchased in 2006 we're pleased to confirm that Eco Kettle has been subject to some redesign and improved significantly.

Verified product owner I've had this kettle now for about 18 months and it's great. It DOES boil quicker than standard kettles and although fiercely ugly, is easy to use and I'd recommend it. However I would say that it has two flaws. First of all - who on earth uses cups that size? We use mugs which are two cup sized or slightly bigger (my latte mug is a two and a half cuppa) so it makes measuring a bit difficult. Also it is quite easy not to close the lid of the top flask properly and pour cold water out along with your hot water.

I've had two of these since March 2007 - the first stopped working completely after a few months and was replaced immediately by the company. I didn't have to return the old one which I thought was very trusting and when I asked what to do with it (being environmentally conscious!) I was told to throw it in the bin! The replacement lasted until July this year when the button you press down to fill the heating chamber stopped locking in place and as a result stopped filling unless you kept your finger pressing down on it. Okay for the cups of coffee, etc but useless when you needed both chambers filled and boiled - because it didn't click into place there was no guarantee that the cavities were properly 'merged' and both sides were being boiled. Great idea of a product, but let down by some aspects of quality. Probably won't buy a replacement and will try another brand with less bits that can break.

This is a fab item we have used successfully for the past few months. With the rising cost of electric if you are a constant tea drinker you will really notice the difference. The kettle is very easy to use and despite its slightly 'cheap' appearance has been quite a talking point with visitors. We have enjoyed our cups of tea more knowing that the water has been boiled only the once and that we are using energy more efficiently. We have had no problems of spitting water and leaks. All in all a nice item with good level of energy saving potential over time.

What a great idea, especially as the cost of electricity keeps increasing. However, there is one big design issue. If you do not use all of the water boiled, returning the kettle to the upright position will cause the remaining water to bubble up through the spout and make a big mess on the counter. This is really annoying and a major design flaw. The only way around this is to gently and slowly turn the kettle upright which is not always practical.

I received this kettle today and was impressed at how quick it boiled 2 cups of water(40 seconds). I have not had a problem pouring out the water and do not find it heavy. I tried the full tank and it took just over 2 minutes. If you use a mug like I do then release 1 & 1/2 cups of water and you will find it is enough. Fantastic kettle and excellent price as well.

Verified product owner I love my eco kettle! I was a bit sceptical as I thought I might be buying an eco gadget that was more effective at assuaging my environmental guilt than at actually making a difference in water and energy consumption but happily I was proved wrong. I've found that if you allocate a little bit more than a 'cup' amount (say to the top of the cup rather than the line below) it's enough for a lovely mug of tea, which is of course the main reason for getting one...

Verified product owner I bought this kettle because my son's girlfriend always completely filled the kettle before boiling the water. I have found two serious problems with it. If you are making more than one drink and put the kettle down between pouring one cup and the next, water will frequently splash back up and out of the spout. Since this is water just off the boil this is quite a hazard. Also in this situation hot water flows back into the handle making it then painfully hot. Since I now live on my own, this is not usually a problem as I am only making one cup. If I have visitors I would not allow them to use this kettle as they are unfamiliar with it and could be hurt. Also as mentioned in other reviews I have read, the measure is very small in terms of 'cup' size - I always use 2 cups for 1 drink. I would not recommend it. Just get used to only boiling what you need in your existing kettle. More of a 'feel good' gimmick than a useful item.

Verified product owner Don't buy this kettle. It doesn't work. I can't believe the reviews above are true.
It seemed like a good idea to be able to boil on the water you need, but the problem is that there is no seal on the main chamber lid. This means that when the main (non boiling chamber) is full, and you boil just enough water for 2 cups, when you tip the kettle up to fill your cups the cold water from the non boiled chamber leaks from the lid into your cup of tea making it lukewarm. It is particularly a pain when filling a tea pot.
I have resorted to locking the plunger down and boiling the whole kettle everytime, thus defeating the object of the kettle.
I was also very suprised that the base came with no method of stopping it slide around the kitchen side. It appears to have 3 recesses for rubber feet but it came with none. I resorted to sticking blu-tac on the bottom to stop me having to play 'chase the base' around the worktop when trying to put the kettle on it.
I don't usually write reviews about things on websites, but this kettle is so awful that I just felt I had to warn people off of it.

The kettle is a good energy saving device, and would be very useful in a staffroom, with people coming in at different times for a drink and boiling water for one cup at a time.It is limited when we have a houseful and want to make a full pot of tea,as the maximum capacity is not sufficient. Pouring is also a problem at times as the shape of the spout can cause an airlock, and we have nearly been scalded several times from boiling water. The idea is good and the minimum boil saves a lot of energy, so on balance I'd recommend it.

i have been using this kettle now for a good few weeks.
yes, i do find it heavier to lift than my old one, and you need to tip it further, that might be because my last kettle was a fiver job from a supermarket though :)
apart from that its great - very well made, stylish and a real talking point in my kitchen. it is also A LOT faster at boiling water than other kettles. sometimes i don't have the rest of the tea ready before it has clicked !!
a great buy, good price and really worth it. i will be recommending this product to others

The Eco Kettle is in my opinion badly designed. Good in concept, energy efficient (boils quickly and quietly) but clumsy and heavy to handle. The spout is inadequate and allows boiling water to splutter out when the kettle is tilted back upright (say when filling more than one mug) even when only a small quantity of water remains. Eco-friendly, but safe and easy to use is surely possible.

Sadly we are disappointed with the ecokettle - several reasons. a)If you pour the water when boiled it will spit out hot water as you tip it back. This could be very dangerous. b)If you try to wait before pouring out hot water it cools down very quickly due to the reservoir of cold water. c)it is cumbersome and heavy when full. GK

This kettle is fantastic with customer service second to none. It has stopped the many users in our household boiling an entire kettle full of water for one cup of tea.Unfortunately after a short period, my kettle would not turn off after boiling, I contacted customer service and a replacement kettle was received the following day.If only all companies were as helpful!

This kettle looks good, and does what it says on the promotional materials.
However, what I did not realise is that the kettle would be so heavy and unbalanced (compared to regular kettles) when the reservoir is full, nor is it a "good pourer".
My partner, who has arthritis in his hands, finds the kettle more difficult to use than a regular kettle.
Finally, if you already have a kettle that shows you how much water you are about to heat up, and you only heat up the quantity you need, then the single advantage of this product is that it will save you walking to the tap to fill the kettle up so many times in a day!

I was really disappointed with this product. I bought it with the intention of recommending it as a replacement for our office kettles. Not only is it fiddly to use, it is also rather dangerous as in a matter of two weeks, two members of my household have been sprayed by boiling water - this happens if you pick up a full kettle of boiling water and try and pour before the bubbling has ceased. The pressure created causes a surge which sprays boiling water out of the spout. Would not recommend to anyone.
STAFF COMMENT - The problem of boiling water behaving in a volatile way if poured whilst still bubbling is not unique to this or indeed any type of kettle and best practice for safe handling of any type of boiling liquid would not recommend such a practice. The Eco Kettle's supplied instructions deliver a clear warning of a potential hazard of water being ejected if the boiling chamber is over filled - however this certainly should not have occurred in normal use!

The Eco kettle has finally bought peace to my household. Andy always likes to fill the kettle up before boiling in case he needs more hot water later. Ade likes to boil the smallest amount possible, but never boils enough. This kettle makes it easy for both of them, and provides me with a peaceful morning.

Having gone through two budget-priced kettles in as many years, we decided it was time to invest in something a little more sturdy, and chose the Eco Kettle mainly for its claims of energy-efficiency.
Our order arrived promptly and, after three weeks of using the Eco Kettle, first impressions have been very good. It looks smart and displays its eco-credentials proudly on the side (vital for the eco-fashion-conscious). Build quality seems good with a positive action on the switch and a snug connection to the cordless base, both of which have given problems in previous kettles we have owned.
The system is easy to use – just fill up the reservoir at the beginning of the day, then depress a plunger to transfer the amount you need to boil into the boiling chamber. One real advantage of the Eco Kettle is that it boils VERY quickly, and quietly too.
The only drawback I can see is that it may be difficult to use for older people or anyone suffering from arthritis, etc. When the reservoir is full, the kettle can be quite heavy, and the plunger does require some pressure to push down.
Apart from that, I would recommend the product wholeheartedly, and it certainly seems comparable in terms of quality and design with other “non-eco” kettles in a similar price range.

I have no idea how much money and frustration this kettle has saved me. I simply could NOT convince the kids to put the amount of water in the kettle that they needed. Now they have to make a conscious decision and guess what. It works! As the kettle was a gift I saved even more money! I am working hard to try to make the whole house carbon neutral and as the kettle in this house is seldom cold, this has gone some way towards making that a reality.

It's good to be able to boil just the amount required, although you can do this just as well in a single chamber kettle.
It's pretty heavy when the reservoir is nearly full.
Be aware that the heated water should be poured as soon as it is ready because its proximity to the cold water reservoir means that it will cool faster than in a conventional kettle.
The cutout (which operates when the kettle is empty) gave up but a phone call to Ethical Superstore soon fixed this.

Top marks for saving energy/money and for achieving it in a relatively cheap/conventional manner.
Ergonomics aren't great; looks like they got so excited they forgot to send it to the design team and it's quite unwieldy due it's balance, size and weight. Overall a great product well worth the money that could do with a little refinement.

Good idea, poor execution! The lid seal works, *until* you want to boil the water in both chambers, ie a kettle full. After you've done that for the first time, any water in the top chamber spills when you pour out boiled water from the bottom one. You can avoid this by only putting in as much water as you want to boil ... but you can do that with any kettle, which makes this hulking great thing redundant. It's top heavy and awkward. Yes, it boils fast, but the moment my husband's back is turned, I'm going to replace it with a smaller, single-chamber, non leaking kettle. And measure my water.

Keen to do my bit, and being a "12 mugs per day person" I asked for one of these kettles for my birthday as soon as it came on the market -when it cost nearly £40. I'm sorry to say that in my opinion it has not been great value for money. I have been very disappointed with it. It is very heavy....although I am over 60 I am not feeble!

Although we were happy with our eco kettle it always leaked from the top pouring colder water into the cup, so you had to press it down tight. Also 2 days after the warranty expired the base fused and it had a large burned hole in the bottom, so off to the recycling bin with it

Q: Does this kettle really boil water hot?
A: Yes. Eco Kettle boils water to 100 degrees c. The insulated internal tank stops the remaining cold water from affecting the boiling temperature.

Q: We tend to use mugs rather than cups in our house so my question is how do the cup measurements compare to mugs? ie would filling to the 3 cup measurement be right for 2 mugs? thank you
A: As there isn't a standard mug (or indeed cup) size it's difficult to say with precision. What we would suggest is a little experimentation. You can dispense water into the boiling chamber - starting with the 3 cup mark for your two mugs - then without boiling (let's not waste electricity) pour into your mugs - this will enable you to quickly assess whether you need to add more or less water according to your particular preference before proceeding to boil.
