Ethical Superstore staff review

Apparently, the average Brit gets through about 4 cups of tea a day. I’m certainly bang in the middle of that average; 2 in the morning, 1 in the afternoon and a peppermint tea at night. Obviously, a kettle is used for more than just cups of tea, but that’s normally what I associate it with as just spotting it in my kitchen kindles a desire to have a cuppa in my hands. When I received the Eco Kettle 2, it looks just how I wanted it to. Smooth and sleek with a modern chrome finish, satisfyingly making a great match with my toaster! I like it’s design and appreciate the unusually detailed volume display. It is definitely heavier than my last kettle, but that doesn’t bother me, it’s nice and sturdy.

What really stands out about the Eco Kettle is quite simply that it makes me think about what I’m doing. Having recently invested in an Owl CM119, I know just how much energy a kettle uses to run – it’s possibly the most expensive appliance in the house! The dual-chambered design of the Eco Kettle awakens my internal energy monitor, reminding me to be energy-efficient in my kettle boiling and only heating enough for one cup, with the added bonus of ensuring the tea-making process is much quicker! When transferring water from one chamber to another, it’s impossible not to think about how much water it takes to make a cup of tea!

It’s not just when I’m boiling water either, the infectious eco-friendly nature of this kettle has changed my outlook on only using what I need. It sits there, (begging me for a brew) in all the appearance of a normal kettle, but subtly serves as a powerful reminder of our responsibility to be more minimalistic in our daily routine.

Disappointing kettle

I bought the Eco Kettle 2 recently, and have been generally disappointed. Firstly, it clicks off when 'boiled', but the water is not as hot as any of the kettles I have used before. There's steam, so it's hit 100 degs! But somehow it's just not hot enough, which is a pretty big deal for a kettle. Secondly, the lid looks closed when it's not. It requires a firm push to properly close it, otherwise it doesn't click off at boiling point. Obviously I'll become accustomed to checking this, but I anticipate getting caught out from time to time, and visitors will need a walkthrough! Finally, the guide to no. of cups is taking some getting used to. My cups are all more than the suggested 200ml, so I'm back to guessing the amount to fill, and regularly finding I'm coming up short. Suppose that's boiling less water though, so it earns the Eco tag one way or another! And on the genuine plus side, it does boil quickly and quietly.

Very poor quality and disappointing

We bought this kettle after a good deal of research into the most efficient, and were hoping for something that would last a good few years. We were immediately disappointed by how flimsy and insubstantial it was. We were even more disappointed by the fact that it seems to use far more electricity than necessary by failing to switch itself off for up to 10 seconds after the water was boiling violently. The water doesn't seem to move very effectively from one chamber to another, with some water remaining in the first one despite holding down the knob as directed. Water leaks from the lid when being poured, and from another unidentified point leaving the stand wet; and within less than three months, the knob has broken, which means that both chambers are boiled ever time, defeating the entire object. Very poor quality, wouldn't recommend at all.

I wanted to replace my old cheap kettle with something more eco-friendly and have been very pleased with the Eco kettle. It looks lovely and has kept its shine and once I got the hang of it has been a doddle to use. It is much easier to fill it up in the morning and then boil what I need. The function to boil both cambers means I can boil the lot for big jobs like mopping the floor. The only problem I have had is when I have over filled the boiling chamber and it boils over, but this is easily remedied.

Looks good, easy to see how much you are filling, but I find the eco-feature disappointing as clicks off before fully boiled resulting in rather tepid drinks.

Q: is the measurement of water transferred in cups or mugs

A: The product features a scale based on 200ml cups, however you can fill to boil, and then dispense boiled water, in any amount which you have judged by eye (i.e. there is no fixed interval / quantity) as long it is above 200ml (which is the minimum safe quantity which can be boiled.)
So if your favourite mug requires water about a third of the way between the one an two cup scale lines this won't be a problem.
