I tried a Solio first, but was very disappointed when I realised the charging tips are very limited, and I would have had to buy a new one to charge my i-Pod. This charger has a fantastic array of charging tips included in the price, and is so easy to use. I recommend anyone to get one, though it's a bit less useful in a British winter - hanging it constantly in a south-facing window is not enough to charge all the gadgets we use.

I deliberated for weeks as to whether to purchase one of these little gadgets or not - having read several really bad reviews of other makes of solar powered chargers. Then I decided to throw caution to the wind and painfully parted company with my precious pennies.

I have not been dissappointed. I love the thing - it does everything it is supposed to and better! It looks good and sturdy (I'll get back to you on that one in the autumn...) and even stylish and I will not be embarrassed to be seen out with it. The posh little carry case is handy for keeping all the bits together on the move but my favourite part - is the solar panelling! I feel so green!!!!

Noting it did not have a tip for my Sony MP3- I panicked briefly then realised I could incorporate the USB cable and it works a treat!! It's so simple to use and there's a sense of ecosatisfaction -using free and sustainable sunshine (it even works with cloud!) to power my 'essentials'!
I look forward to a summer of travelling about and festivals- without that worry of being out of contact with my adolescent offspring.
(Mmm.... was this a wise move, I wonder....? Did I think this one through...?)

Q: I want to buy this for my partner as a birthday present. he is a professional photographer who has to carry loads of chargers everywhere. Do you think this would charge a digital SLR? Or would I be better getting a solar battery charger? Thanks

A: Not unless the battery can be charged when inside the camera via the mini USB port, however if the battery needs to be removed and charged on a dock then it won't. John.

Q: Hi, can I run my DAB radio via the 3.5mm jack connection from the Powermonkey ? It's a mains powered unit but I'd like to be a bit more mobile.

A: It all depends on the make and model of the radio, as the power consumption varies with each model. However, if the unit is designed to be mains powered, then it is very possible that it would require power at a faster rate than that which the Powermonkey Explorer can produce. If the radio has the ability to be charged via mains electricity, but has an internal battery for use away from a power source, the Powermonkey Explorer should be suitable.

If you simply looking for a way to get DAB radio away from a power source, you may be interested in the Freeplay Devo Wind-Up DAB Radio, which can be charged via the attached hand crank, or via mains power.

John asked this question on 15th Nov 2007

Q: What does the solar slave do?
How long will an IPOD be charged for?

A: The PowerMonkey Explorer is a universal charger for all mobile phones, PDA's, and iPods. Designed to be used by people on the move, the PowerMonkey Explorer holds a rechargeable battery which can be charged using the a supplied mains adapter. When fully charged the manufacturers claim it can power an iPod for 40 hours, a mobile phone for 96 hours, a digital camera for 1,600 pictures, a PDA for 48 hours.
The solar slave is the supplied 1 Watt (5V 200mA) PV Solar Panel which enables the powermonkey explorer to recharged where mains connection is not possible / desirable... 6 hours of sunlight will charge the powermonkey explorer to one third of it's capacity. John

Many thanks,

Q: I have a samsung phone E720 will power monkey have a conection for this, also can I charge a psp and finally will the solar panel attach to a rucksac as I am going treking soon, ta

A: The unit comes with a tip for the Samsung E720, so if this uses the same charger as the E900, then yes, it will work. It is definitely possible to charge a PSP (one of my colleagues does so). If you are going trekking, and need something to attach to a rucksack, the Solio Hybrid may be a better choice for your needs. Hope this helps. Thomas.

Q: Bought power monkey explorer xmas present, is there a tip for Nikon digital camera CoolPix S200? Many thanks

A: If the camera can be charged directly from a computer, via USB, then you simply need to use the included female USB tip, and connect your camera lead to it. Hope this helps. Thomas.

Q: is it possible to charge an apple mac book with this product via the usb port

A: It's certainly possible to connect the Powermonkey eXplorer to an apple macbook but it wouldn't be effective as a means of charging. The standard mac book charger has a 60W rating and the Powermonkey delivers a charge of up to 3.85W so it wouldn't be viable for this application. John
