You can mains charge, wind up or solar charge or a mixture . i gave it the recommended 24 hour charge when i purchased it back in may and sat it on the bathroom window ledge in minimal sun and its being going for up to half an hour a day at a good volume ever since. no more charging batteries for hours just to get a total of half an hour of play. simplicity itself, does all sorts of things i haven't even tried yet. excellent value.

Of all the windup radios we sell, this is my favourite. It is just small enough to travel with while still giving a good sound when used without headphones. The digital screen makes tuning much easier – especially for short wave stations which are always tricky to tune in well. It has Long Wave – ideal for Test Cricket and the shipping forecast if you sail.
The best aspect is the variety of charging methods – windup, mains charger, solar powered or internal battery. Ideal for any environment – hot or cold. The only downsides are that you can’t solar charge while playing and there is no “lock” feature on the buttons. This latter one means that once packed in your bag it can be advertently switched on.

Question asked on 21st Nov 2007

Q: can you hear the mechanism as it winds down? I have an old Baygen that is very noisy, and so I no longer use it.

Thanks

A: No - the summit is extremely quiet in operation it uses improved wind up technology which has seen a change from the old steel spring mechanism to a direct-charge generator, allowing the user to keep winding for as long as they like - storing all the energy they need - and silent operation. John.

Question asked on 14th Nov 2007

Q: Please can you let me know if the Freeplay summit radio is water resistant?
Thanks - Helen

A: This radio is not designed to be water resistant. Andy
If water resistance is a key criteria for you, you may like to consider the Eton FR350 is a water-resistant radio with the added features of an LED light and mobile phone charger.

Q: How many playing hours does the radio provided when using the solar to charge? Thanks

A: The summit can't actually solar charge whilst playing. Using the solar panel n direct sunlight and the radio is turned off, it will take about 40 hours to fully charge. Using the supplied mains adapter, it will take about 24 hours to fully charge the battery. Or using the crank, it will take about 40 minutes, if you constantly wind at the optimum speed as indicated by the green charge level indicator. John.

Q: Could you tell me how much listening time the Eton FR350 wind up gives? Is it the same as this radio ie 30 seconds gives 30 minutes? Also does the Etono FR350 mobile phone charger fit all types of mobile phones? We are not sure whether to go for the FR350 or this one, the Freeplay Summit radio. Thanks

A: The Eton FR350 - approx. 60-90 seconds of cracking will give you about 40-60 minutes of radio play.
It comes complete with cell phone adapter tips for charging select models of Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. Not all manufacturers or makers are supported. John.

Q: Will i be be able to use the radio to listen to digital stations as it mentions digital tuner but not wheather it is DAB compatible?

A: Sadly, the Freeplay Summit is not DAB compatible, and the 'digital tuning' mentioned relates solely to the tuning mechanism. We do stock two DAB compatible radios:

Pure Siesta DAB Clock Radio

Freeplay Devo DAB Radio

Hopefully one of these will suit your needs.

Q: How do you set the alarm on the Summit so the radio comes on instead of the 'beeper'? Thanks

A: Unfortunately it can't be done. The radio does possess a sleep function but unfortunately can't wake you up to a broadcast. John.

purpleheather asked this question on 12th Jan 2008

Q: Does the alarm have a 'beep', or does the radio just come on when the alarm goes off. And can you see the time on the clock in the dark?
Thanks you

A: The alarm does indeed have a beep, but doesn't have a radio option for the alarm. There is a sleep button on the radio and a further one to illuminate the display, for use at night. Hope this helps, Thomas
