Very good product for better understanding the energy usage of your plug in products. It couldn't be simpler to use with very straightforward instructions. Just enter your Kilowatts per Hour price for electricity - this is your standard price of electricity available from your bill (in my case 8.5p). The meter will remember this price even when unplugged. Now go around the house plugging things into the meter. You can quickly see the real difference in boiling a full kettle versus just enough for one cup. It will show the power (Watts) being used and how much energy (KWHs) was used over a period - e.g. to boil the kettle.

I was also interested to see how much my microwave is using even when it isn't cooking!

My freeview personal video recorder uses almost as much in standby as when switched on. I've decided it will be switched off off most nights (I can cope with the fortnightly programme guide being updated just once a week).

A good way of raising energy awareness within the family.

Part of my job here at Ethical Superstore is to take home, test, and review certain products to give you, the ethical consumer, a broader picture of what the product actually performs like.

I have recently been testing the Ecosavers Powermeter and can report the following; It is easy to set up once you know how much you pay per unit of electricity (you can find it on your bill!), and you can be monitoring your energy use and spend in no time. You simply plug it into the socket then plug the appliance you wish to monitor into it. You can choose to leave it in one appliance all day and see how much electricity it uses and costs you, or move it around your home and check various appliances.

It was interesting to see the effect of using appliances in real time – as you’re using them but I feel that a more comprehensive energy monitor would be of greater benefit. If you just want to keep an eye on how much charging your mobile phone costs, or how much electricity the computer uses then this could be the product for you, but for larger scale energy monitors check out the rest of our range.

Q: do these meters have a device memory? so for example can they record energy consumption for the week, month etc?

Also are they battery powered, so if the mains go off does it lose the data?

A: Sadly not! Both the Efergy and Wattson monitors do have a memory facility - but these will enable you to monitor an entire house rather than a single appliance.
