Having now used the Solio for over a year (my first outing with it was the slightly damp Glastonbury Festival 2007), I can safely say that it is a great piece of kit.
Being a keen festival goer, having a means of avoiding the dreaded 'no battery' symbol on my phone is essential. The unit charges my phone (Apple iPhone) quickly and easily, and has yet to let me down. It has seen the best and worst of the British weather, and come out of the other end in one slight mud-scarred piece.
When faced with a decent amount of sunlight, the Solio is in its element. The red light on the rear clearly shows the intensity of the light, and therefore the rate of charge, and a full charge has been gained in a single (albeit remarkably clear and sunny) day.
The ability of the Solio to act as a portable battery pack is very useful. I can keep it charged up by leaving it on a window-sill at home, and when it is needed I simply pack it up and throw it in my bag, ready for use whenever it may be needed. The days of my phone running out of juice are now, thankfully, long gone.
The only drawback I can find is the slightly temperamental control system. It can sometimes be difficult to get the unit to stop discharging after unplugging a device, and it can take a minute or so of fiddling with the button to stop the telltale green light from flashing.
Just so you know, I am a member of staff here at Ethicalsuperstore. It shouldn't make any difference to the review, but I wouldn't want you to think I was giving you the hard sell or anything :)

This is a great little contraption, as a student saving a little money here and there is what we try to achieve and i have found that leaving this gadget on my windowsill happily charges my phone and ipod! Its also priceless when on climbing trips to leave in the sun at a crag and have use of my phone for the rest of the evening! And its not too bulky either, which is great!

Great little gadget which charges all sorts of things but check carefully that it charges exactly what you want it to. I found that although it comes with a Samsung tip it's not the right one for my phone (Samsung X700) and in fact a tip for my phone doesn't seem to exist at all, even to buy separately which was a bit disappointing. I also don't think it works with my camera. To check what devices it works with go to http://www.solio.com/charger/explore-solio/comp-devices.html
However if it is compatible with your gadgets then it's great. Very simple and easy to use as well as light and compact, not forgetting of course that it helps to save the planet!

Bought one of these in pink to charge an iPhone, as I travel a lot and am also dusting off the camping gear for the festival season. This little gadget works a treat! I leave it on my window sill to charge when I'm at home or work. I've even been known to prop it up on the table on a train on a long journey! It gives full charge in the same time as from the mains.
It's a well thought-out design that is clearly high quality. A good investment I think!

Bought this solar charger recently to take on a trip to South America. A bit annoyed that in the bag of tips there isn't one for an iPhone 3GS already, but quickly obtained one from the manufacturers. However, on performance I can't fault it. Had the charger tied to my backpack on the Inca Trail to Machu Piccu, stuck to my hotel window in Quito and laid on the deck of a yacht in the Galapagos Islands - kept 2 iPhones charged up for use at all time. Brilliant.

Lizzie asked this question on 1st May 2008
Q: Does this, priced at £49.95 include the necessary cable, mentioned in the write up, to connect to an iPod? and if not do you supply them and at what cost?
A: The solio can be used to charge an i-pod using the supplied female usb connector tip and coupling this to the usb lead supplied with all i-pods (the same lead which is used to transfer music etc to the i-pod from your computer).
If however you wish to connect the solio direct to the i-pod (and leave the original i-pod usb lead at home) a dedicated adaptor tip can be purchased seperately, click here for details

Q: how long does it keep it's charge & can this or any other solar charger be powered using a 12v cigarette lighter
A: The manufacturer's expect that Solio can retain it's charge for up to 12 months.
None of the chargers in our current range are supplied with an adaptor to allow them to receive charge using a 12v cigarette lighter. John

Q: Does the Solio fit Samsung D600E? Thanks
A: The tips supplied with the Solio are not compatible with this phone. If your phone is capable of being charged from the USB socket of a computer, you could use the USB replicator which is supplied with the Solio to charge the D600E. Hope this helps.

Q: Please could you tell me whether this product is compatable with any of the following: Nokia 6500c, canon IXUS 40 or the Logitech mm50 portable speakers for iPod (it has a 12Vol AC adaptor no connection for iPod data cable unless the iPod dock can be used to charge?) Thank you!
A: An iPod can be charged directly from the Solio, as the Solio comes bundled with a connector featuring a female USB cable. Simply plug the USB cable that came with your iPod into this, and it will charge as normal.
Unfortunately we have no information on the other devices you mentioned, but if you were to purchase the item and find it incompatible, you would be covered by our 14 day guarantee. Hope this helps.

Peter asked this question on 28th Jan 2008
Q: I've just bought a solio charger off you through amazon. I love the idea but why dosn't it work with my creative zen V+ mp3 player. Its just a mini usb conection and will recognise being plugged in but won't actually charge. this is very dissapointing because it was the only thing that i was concerned about the solio charging. Any suggestions????
A: Unfortunately not all Micro-USBs are the same in how they are wired. Although we have never tested the Creative Zen V+ ourselves, Solio sell a special tip for the Creative MP3 players. This would suggest their testing has revealed it is not compatible with the standard tips. You can see the the tip they suggest on the Solio website.

David asked this question on 22nd Dec 2007
Q: I would like to use the panel to charge my camera battery. It has a normal Li-ion rechargeable battery, which recharges by removing from the camera and placing in a charger (camera make is Ricoh - Caplio R7). Is there a suitable adapter to plug the charger (normal UK plug) into?
A: Sorry the charger does not have the facility of generating 240volts so doesn't have a normal 3-pin adaptor. Andy

Q: does the solio come with a tip to connect to nintendo DS?
A: The Solio unfortunately does not come with a tip to connect to the Nintendo DS, but if this was the device you were specifically looking to charge I can point you in the direction of the FreeLoader Solar Charger. This charges devices which require between 3v - 5.5v, and comes with an adaptor tip to charge the Nintendo DS Lite. Jo.

Q: Can you confirm if the charger can be used with the Sony Ericsson W910i?
Many thanks.
A: The Solio Mobile Phone & iPod Solar Charger does not come with a w910i compatible connector. However, it does come with both a mini USB and a standard size USB meaning that if you can charge your phone with the supplied connector you received with you phone, you will be able to charge your phone up via the Solio using one of these connectors. Q: Hello. The micro USB tip supplied doesn't fit the micro USB port on my Nokia 6500c. Is there a tip which will fit?
A: The Solio does not come, as standard, with a Micro USB connector, just the Mini USB version, which is slightly bigger. However, if you have a data cable for your phone, you may be able to use the Solio anyway.
Simply plug the included USB replicator tip (female USB) into the Solio, plug your data cable into the USB replicator, and then plug the other end into your phone. You should then be able to charge your phone without issue. Hope this helps.
