Amazing product! Took me about three minutes to set up (and two of those were unscrewing the back of the sender to insert the battery) and we were up and running. My partner (who previously poo pooed my energy saving leanings) was even more amazed as you could see the impact of switching on the only none energy saving lights in the house (9x down lighters in the kitchen), increased our hourly cost by 5p and increased our yearly Carbon Footprint by an astronomical sum and all displayed within a couple of seconds. Good thing is within a couple of hours of installing the monitor I saw my families attitudes changing. My eleven year old taking an interest in how much energy the big LCD TV uses etc etc (ooh, I will turn it off when I come through for my tea... etc etc) . Well worth the investment. A+

Hi
I bought an Owl and had it working out of the box in minutes. I did not realise when I bought it that it did not store data, I want to tell the children how much we used on a previous day and this will not do that. The Owl only gives you real time information, it does this very well but it is not quite what I wanted. To manage first you must measure. The girl at Ethical Superstore was very helpful and explained how to send it back. I have now ordered an Efergy unit.

I was little nervous about trying this product out as I’m not one of the world’s most practical guys so the idea of connecting stuff around electrical cables was, in my head at least, a little off-putting but last month I took the plunge... a triumph of curiosity over reluctance!
As soon as I opened the box I was impressed – the instructions were both simple and comprehensive – instilling confidence, and enabled me to get the OWL up and running in 10 minutes. They don’t just deliver in terms of installation; they’re equally good on operation and ensured that navigating the display modes was easy too. Another plus point was the fact that all necessary batteries were included.
I then lost the entire evening going around switching every electrical thing off and on to see it’s impact. Some time ago we began a strict policy of replacing old school incandescent bulbs with energy saving bulbs but a solitary one did remain in the porch – to see the difference in consumption when this was switched on was really marked.
Is it worth the money? For me that’s a definite yes! I was able to understand that with all appliances switched off (that’s those which could be – I was leaving the fridge and freezer on) my consumption was around 3p per hour. Before going to bed however I was regularly noticing a reading of about 8p per hour. A quick check in the rooms of my teens and subsequent removal of phones and mp3 players from charge, coupled with the unplugging of pc’s and games consoles seemed to remedy the situation. I’m guessing this could save me around 40p per day and paying back the OWL in 125 days. Perhaps the greatest impact is in terms of education – seeing how the display rockets when the kettle is switched on has made me far more precise about the amount of water I boil each time, and after a month or so the need to raid the kid’s rooms to un-plug stuff were diminishing – good habits were beginning to form!
The OWL doesn’t have a memory function – so if you are keen to see just how much your energy consumption is behaving over time this won’t deliver (unlike others such as the Efergy or the Wattson) but if you want to have something simple and clear you can’t go wrong with this.

Q: Will this measure usage on a single appliance ? will it work with Economy 7 Tarriff?. I want to measure usage on a heat pump and then place on mains meter to measure entire house
A: The OWL cannot be used to measure usage on an Economy 7 tariff. The only meter we stock which can do this is the Wattson, which is available at: http://www.ethicalsuperstore.com/products/diy-kyoto/wattson-home-energy-meter/
However, neither can be used for measuring usage from a single appliance.

Q: Does the Owl record ALL electricity being consumed at that minute in a house for example: freezer, television, washing machine, fridge, tumbler dryer, dehumidifer, kettle lights in all rooms and computer etc.
A: Yes - the OWL measures the electric power entering the meter in to your house/flat. The power reading covers all items in the house/flat that consume power at that moment. Andy

Q: I have two meters - a day one and a night one. Will the Owl monitor still work in this situation?
A: As long as you have a single supply into the house, then hour will work with both meters. Simply clip the power monitor around the feed cable before it splits supply the meters.

Wendy asked this question on 22nd Mar 2008
Q: Will the monitor work with an Economy 7 meter, i.e. showing the different charges on both the day & night tariff?
A: Sadly the OWL is not compatible with Economy 7 tariffs. You may be interested in the Wattson, which does have this functionality: http://www.ethicalsuperstore.com/products/diy-kyoto/wattson-home-energy-meter/

Q: I have holiday cottages where several cottages run off a single meter: does the monitor have to be attached to the meter or could I put monitors in individual cottages to show how much each is using?
A: The monitor needs to be attached to the meter in order to measure electricity usage.

Q: How accurate is this energy monitor and does the instrument require independent recalibration after an elapsed period of time eg twelve months.
A: This product uses ‘phase’ current transformer sensing technology to detect and monitor a magnetic field around your household electricity power cable. It measures the amps being used and, by reference to the system voltage, calculates the amount of power being used, the cost, and the amount of greenhouse gas emissions. It then transmits this information from the Sender Box to a cordless Remote Monitor on a frequency of 433MHz, from up to 30 meters away (unbroken transmission).
NOTE The product is primarily intended as an educational device to aid understanding of the cost of operating electrical appliances in the home. As such, it is not intended to replace your accurate electricity revenue meter, so it cannot be used to check your electricity account.

Q: What extra features does the OWL provide over the Efergy Energy Saving Meter for the additional cost. I can only see the Alarm function and the Humidity monitor as the differences. Thanks
A: That's basically it plus the OWL can be set to update at either 6 or 30 second intervals (Efergy updates at 6 seconds only) and it monitors temperature too. The other difference is in battery utilisation the OWL uses AA whereas the Efergy uses AAA. John.

Q: What is the environmental payback with this and similar devices?
A: The environmental payback will depend largely on how well one manages their consumption. It can facilitate rapid improvement for many, but perhaps it's biggest advantage is in the area of education and awareness raising. I certainly found that it quickly helped my family to develop good habits with respect to prudent energy use. John

Q: Can the audible alarm be set to a power level e.g. 3.5kW?
A: The alarm is specifically designed to be set to a cost-per-hour limit, which is calculated via the price-per-unit values that you enter into your OWL. Therefore if you wish to set your alarm to alert you at a particular power level, simply calculate how much this level would cost per hour, and set that as your alarm price limit.
which means it should certainly help to monitor your power consumption.

Jacqueline asked this question on 24th Aug 2008
Q: I'm looking for an energy monitor, but am not sure which to choose (apart from the Wattson, which is more than we'd need). The Owl offers temperature and humidity readings - but is this in the room where the monitor is rather than the sensor? Has anyone found this feature to be useful? I wouldn't mind the ability to compare readings historically though this isn't essential.
A: The Owl's temperature and humidity readings are for the room where the monitor is rather than the sensor. As to whether anyone found this feature to be useful this is rather subjective - but we imagine it is potentially informative, especially if one's heating system were electric rather say gas. The Owl has no memory facility so doesn't have the ability to compare readings historically, the Efergy may be a better choice if this is important.

Q: My electricity meter is on the outside wall, with the only access from outside the house. Will this affect performance of the wireless sensor?
A: As long as the sensor is within 30m of the OWL energy monitor, the location of the sensor should be ok. I would recommend that you do, however, ensure the sensor box is sheltered from the elements.
