Oak Tree (Quercus Robur)
The Oak is considered sacred to most major cultures but was held in particular high esteem to the Celts. It was known as the 'Father of the Woods' possibly due to its size, strength and longevity. Oak was a symbol of truth, courage and knowledge and was often used in spells associated with success and stability. Doors were often made of Oak as this was thought to protect the home from evil. The Oak is a mighty tree that will grow for hundreds of years and makes an excellent gift for an important man in your life. Tree supplied is 20-50cm tall.
Large branches of the English oak rise from a short trunk to form a massive crown - rising to 115ft (35m). The leaves are alternate and almost stalkless with small "ears" at the base of the leaf and four or five lobes on each side. The acorns are often in pairs on long stalks (distinguishing it from the Sessile Oak). Once used for ship building it is still used for panelling and furniture.
