The 'Tree of Knowledge', The Celts associated the Hazel with wisdom and inspiration and it was thought that new skills and knowledge could be gained by eating Hazelnuts. Hazelnuts were often presented to those facing a particularly tough challenge. Today Hazelnuts are traditionally enjoyed at Christmas time and are also quite a delicacy for the local wildlife. It's also a tradition for children to shake a Hazel tree during Halloween and collect the falling nuts. Hazel Trees can grow to around 20ft (6m) and will make a strong, dense hedge if cut and laid. Tree supplied is 20cm-60cm tall.

Native throughout the British Isles, the Hazel Tree can grow to around 30ft (9m). It can make a strong dense hedge if cut and laid, and makes an ideal hedge if interplanted with thorns and then laid. It is traditionally used for hurdles, basketwork and occasionally used for walking sticks. The nuts are edible and are eagerly sought after by many forms of wildlife.

Care for your tree

As soon as you receive your tree, plant it into a small plant pot or straight into the ground. If you cannot plant your tree straight away, keep spraying the roots and leaves with water and keep the tree moist and away from direct heat. You can prune your tree each year around September - its important to do this to keep your trees shape in later life
