Crab Apple Tree (Malus St lvestris)
Crab Apple or the 'Tree of Love' as the Celts know it. Apples have long been associated with love and featured in many ancient traditions of finding future lovers. The Crab Apple, although rather sour when raw is perfect for making traditional jam and jelly. Tree supplied is 20-60cm tall.
Native throughtout the British Isles, it can grow to 30ft (9m). A small spreading tree often with a dense crown and large twisted branches, the latter can be quite spiny. Delicate white flowers provide an autumn crop of crab apples and although the fruit is bitter it can be made into jelly, jam and wine. It is an excellent food source for birds. Somewhat suprisingly it can take cutting back very well and is an interesting component that can be included in traditional hedgerows.
