This Mozambique sensation first came to Britain in 2004, in a collaborative tour with Empty Boat which began in northern Mozambique in association with WaterAid. Massukos have been massive in Mozambique almost since it's founding by Feliciano dos Santos in 1994. The band combines traditional rhythms and melodies with such international influences such as jazz, pop, and other African genres, all held together with soulful Portuguese lyrics.
Massukos has toured extensively on the international stage, and have made appearances at the Make Poverty History concert in Edinburgh. They have campaigned in Mozambique to raise awareness about water sanitation, hygiene, and HIV/AIDS.
Harnessing their popularity to fight poverty, Massukos make music that is not only phenomenally beautiful but also a powerful force for change” Rita Ray
Superstars in their native country of Mozambique, Massukos have been hailed as “the next Buena Vista Social Club”. They have sold more than 80,000 copies of their first album and their sensational new album Bumping - featuring jazz legends Harry Beckett and Steve Buckley - promises to follow suit.
Massukos have an enviable reputation as the country's most successful band but they are also making their mark as initiators of social change. Originating from Niassa in northern Mozambique, one of the poorest parts of Africa, Massukos speak out against the hardships that have affected their lives. Passionate about what they do, the band travels for miles to remote villages to deliver simple life-saving messages such as “more condoms less partners”. Feliciano dos Santos - the leader of Massukos - is also the director of Estamos, who are involved with the installation of latrines and clean water points, as well as hygiene and HIV/AIDS education.
With the release of their new album, a second UK tour on the horizon and an invitation from Michael Eavis to play at Glastonbury 2008, the band's success story is set to continue in the coming year.
