Square Seagrass Basket

A 20cm x 20cm fairly traded seagrass basket handmade in Bangladesh. The wonderful natural look of this bowl comes from its gorgeous rich colouring. The fibre begins as malé, a tall grass that grows in saline waters. To make the baskets, the fibre is tightly and evenly bound in coils, then sewn to make the shapes. It is an exclusive One Village design made in village cooperative societies in rural hamlets of western Bangladesh, close to the India border.

One Village was one of the pioneers of marketing for social change when, in 1979, they set out as marketing support for craftmakers' cooperatives. The first priority of One Village remains support to workers in artisans' co-ops, and this is achieved by providing customers with exceptional products that cannot easily be found elsewhere.
