Liberation is the result of many, many years of work by two of the best known names in Fairtrade - Twin Trading and Equal Exchange. These organisations, which each have long histories of working with small scale farmers in the developing world, helped set up Cafedirect and other successful enterprises with the goal of encouraging development through trade.
Work with nut farmers and gatherers started in the 1980’s, helping to build knowledge and organisations. In 2005 the first Fairtrade Labelled nuts were brought to the UK. Then a business plan was established for Liberation, in consultation with the producers who were to become joint owners of the project. Finally in 2007 Liberation Foods CIC was established. The company is 42% owned by the farmers themselves (the rest of the shares are owned by Fairtrade organisations and ethical investors). The farmers have a say in decision making and when a dividend is paid will receive a share of profits!
