Freeplay Ranger Wind-up, Solar & Rechargeable Radio
From: Freeplay POVID: 13824
The Freeplay Ranger Radio promises assured listening, anytime, anywhere. Offering a choice of wind-up, solar and rechargeable power, the Ranger incorporates the latest in Freeplay's self-sufficient technology - which means unparalleled sound quality, playtime performance, dependability, and durability.
Technical Information: The Ranger FM/AM Radio is fitted with a DC input facility to accommodate the AC/DC adapter charger, and an earphone socket for personal listening. The Freeplay Ranger will play for approximately 35 minutes at normal volume per 30 second wind, and can be rewound at any time for as much playtime as you want. An LED charge level indicator tells you the best speed to wind.
The transmission is constructed to high manufacturing tolerances for glass re-enforced Nylon and Acetyl, dissimilar plastics that dramatically increase the life of the transmission. Under wind-up conditions the batteries receive a conditioning charge that negates the memory effect common to some wind up systems.
Instructions for Use: The Free Play Ranger can be charged in three ways, Hand winding, charged via a traditional plug, or via solar power. In direct sunlight the Ranger will charge itself and play continuously without winding. The internal Ni-MH battery can be fully charged from the solar panel or the AC/DC adapter. The Freeplay Ranger will give 25 hours of playtime, depending on volume, when fully charged.
For best use, the battery requires a conditional charge before first use, or after prolonged inactivity. This can be done by administering several 30 second wind cycles, or with charging from the adapter.
Caution: The Freeplay Ranger isn't waterproof, so keep away from water sources.

So good I've just ordered a second one! My first has lived happily for several years in the bathroom and the new one is destined for the kitchen. It will go on the windowsill where it can recharge for free and there is no worry about having a free plug or a cable in the way - perfect!
Hi, I was given a Ranger radio some time ago and it is brilliant. I only use the wind up or the solar power, it does not get fully charged every time by any means but the sound is really good and the battery has not appeared to have suffered by being partially charged. There is a knack to getting a grip on the radio while cranking but the more you do it the easier it gets and you really don't have to crank for very long. I leave the radio accessible to sunshine during the day and then in the winter a minute's cranking will easily last 3/4 hour in the bathroom! In the garden in the summer I let the sun do the work, I saw one being used by a decorator, it was sat on the windowsill enjoying the sunshine and playing merrily. The sound reproduction is very good quality through the speaker or headphones. It's as much a friend as my old 'tranny' was but so much more eco friendly!
