Origins - Mtondeza CD
What Bob Geldof and Midge Ure started with BandAid, we are now extending with the introduction of Fair Trade Music, with Traidcraft's development charity earning a share of every CD sold.
This CD is dedicated to the people of the village of Mtondeza, Malawi, including Fairtrade sugar cane producers of Kasinthula who benefit from Traidcraft trading and support programmes. The sublime choir recordings on this CD were recorded at Mtondeza village, Malawi on April 25, 2004 by Traidcraft's Fiona Thomson in a service led by Bishop Kennedy S Ndaluza, Church of the Samaritan Way.
If you're a musician, we encourage you to buy this CD and remix your own interpretation under the Creative Commons licensing scheme we support. Then share it with us, we'd love to support it!
Fiona Thompson recalled her experience on that day, "each of the choirs took it in turn to start singing while in their seats and then dance down the aisle to the front of the church. The choirs were all ages, and often the lead singers were very young girls or boys. All of them danced as they sang, and sometimes members of the congregation joined in the dancing and cheering. Bishop Ndaluza had to ask them to sing only a few songs each, as there were so many choirs Their faces were transformed when they sang - and everyone wanted to keep on singing! We left early - after one and a half hours - but before we did, we told them that we hoped to share their singing and their stories with people when we got back to the UK."
