Top class Hermitage from a top class producer!
Tasting Notes:
This wine is subtle, elegant and long. It does not overpower or overwhelm, but rather creeps up on you and then you realise that this is a very fine wine indeed. Spicy, red fruits and a lingering finish with great purity of flavours. The grapes are destemmed and fermented in open wooden vats with two daily treadings. It is matured in oak casks, a third of which are new and is unfined and unfiltered. Chapoutier recommends twinning with venison fillet in red wine sauce or roast beef - sounds like a match made in heaven!
More Information:
It is difficult to think of Hermitage without thinking of Michel Chapoutier. The firm was founded in 1808 and has grown tremendously successful. Michel is a charismatic ambassador for his wines and for biodynamics which he has been practising since 1991. It was Maurice Monier de la Sizeranne, who owned this plot of Hermitage vines, who was the inventor of the first version of abbreviated Braille which has featured on Chapoutier's labels since 1996.
