More Information:
Thandi means nurturing love in Xhosa. We visited there in February for the second time and met Rydal Jeftha who explained the history and how it all works. Established in 1995, Thandi were the first ever wine to receive Fairtrade accreditation in 2003. Three farms contribute their grapes to the project. The first called Lebanon is situated in the Elgin Valley. Lutouw is on the banks of the Olifants River and Nietbegin is on the slopes of the Helderberg mountain in Stellenbosch. Thandi receive approx. 10 eurocents per bottle from the Fairtrade premium. Rydal pays this in cash straight back to the farmers who decide what to do with the money. There are around 300 families involved altogether. For more information see their website: http://www.thandi.com.
