Superb, full-flavoured wine from the world's oldest biodynamic Pinotage vineyard.
Tasting Notes:
Rich, complex, cedary, cherry flavours which explode in the mouth yet retain a purity and minerality that keeps the wine fresh and alive. Very fine.
More Information:
If you could bottle Johan Reyneke's enthusiasm as a biodynamic winemaker, you would be very rich! He is one of the very few winemakers in South Africa who produce biodynamic wines and is a bit of a ground-breaker! The 20 hectare farm overlooks Stellenbosch and the mountain ranges round False Bay. Johan's aim has always been to express the uniqueness of the soil and situation. He was the first to convert Pinotage to organic and biodynamic viticulture and this wine just gets better and better as the vines regain their balance and resistance to disease. During a visit to his vineyard I saw his neighbour's beautifully neat and weed-free vineyard but the topsoil was hard, compacted and devoid of life. Just a few feet away on the vineyards that Johan has nurtured with homeopathic quantities of cow horn manure and silica, I sunk my hand deep into the crumbly, living soil. The grapes tasted so good that Johan's dog, a Rhodesian ridgeback cross, was gobbling them up in the next door row!Johan has often put his workers' interests before his own. In the early 1990s he met Nelson Mandela during his quest to get government funds to help his workers buy a share of the Uitzicht farm. When he finally succeeded, the foreman said that actually they would rather have houses than shares! So Johan helped them buy decent houses for each family whereas the five families used to share one outside loo. This was costly for Johan who ended up moving into one of the worker's old cottages with his wife and child. The farm now qualifies as a Black Empowerment Project using a government land grant to help the workers buy a 24% share in the farm. They are also receiving training in winemaking, marketing and business skills.
