The Bishopston Trading Company specialises in fairly traded organic goods, directly imported from rural India.  They have used a reliable source of cotton since 2000, which is not only organic but also grown from non-genetically modified seed.  Going organic is important as it is estimated that 50% of pesticides used in India are used in the cotton fields, which is damaging to the fields, to the water supplies, and long term exposure can be damaging to the health of farm labourers.  The company’s fair trading credentials are extensive; they are members the Fair Trade Organisation IFAT and the British Association for Fair Trade Shops, Licensees of the Fairtrade Foundation. Their suppliers receive a fair price, and that their workers earn not only an above average wages, but most importantly their employment is secure and stable throughout the year.

All of Bishopston’s profits are used to benefit the people of K.V. Kuppan through their registered charity, the South India Rural Development Trust, so when buying these lovely gifts and decorations you can be sure that you are helping to make a difference.
