Ethicalsuperstore.com invited eight business students from the school to visit its Ouseburn headquarters and to take part in company activities in order to gain a better understanding of the live business environment.

The girls toured the premises looking at a selection of the ethical, fair-trade and eco friendly products that the company sells on its website. The girls were also shown how the internet based company works behind the scenes, from taking orders, processing and dispatching, to looking at customer buying trends.

Christine Gaynor, business teacher at Westfield, said: “We have always encouraged trips to local businesses to see how they work. Ethicalsuperstore.com is especially intriguing for the girls as it is a web based company – it’s great for them to see how a live business works behind the website pages we see. We hope that visits like this will inspire the girls to become entrepreneurs and to come up with ideas for our own Young Enterprise group.

“It’s really important to put theory into practice this is certainly the best way. The visit to ethicalsuperstore.com has been great for the girls as they’ve not only gained business knowledge from a strong North East based company but they’ve also learnt about the wider challenges when running an ethical business.”

The girls, who were both GSCE and A-level business students, were given their unique insight into ethicalsuperstore.com by Claire Malone, PR, Events & Partnership Manager. Claire discussed how the number of products has risen to over 3,500 in two years and also told the girls about the strict measures that are in place when sourcing new products to make sure they are fair-trade, eco friendly or ethical. Legislation and banking were also topics discussed during the inspirational visit.

Claire commented: “It’s really beneficial for the girls to see how we operate an online business and to encounter first hand the processes involved in a successful business.
